Responsibilities
As the Controller, you will manage the full spectrum of accounting operations and ensure financial processes are scalable, compliant, and efficient:
- Accounting Operations & Reporting
- Own month-end and year-end close processes.
- Manage AR/AP (invoicing, collections, vendor payments), payroll, tax, fixed assets, inventory, and revenue recognition.
- Own multi-state tax compliance, including sales/use tax, personal property, and other hardware related filings.
- Handle payroll processing, compliance, and 1099 filings across multiple states.
- Partner with external tax accountants for year-end corporate returns, R&D tax credits, and related compliance.
- Financial Policies & Controls
- Develop and enforce accounting policies, internal controls, and close processes.
- Lead insurance and risk management activities, including renewals and broker coordination.
- Manage equity administration in partnership with Legal/HR (stock option tracking, 409A, ASC 718 stock comp accounting).
- Systems & Process Optimization
- Own ERP system migrations and scaling (QuickBooks → NetSuite/Sage).
- Implement process creation and automation to increase efficiency.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting for management and board, partnering with FP&A as needed.
- Compliance & Strategic Support
- Maintain compliance with state/local regulations, annual reports, and business licenses.
- Support lender diligence, investor reporting, and audit preparation.
- Translate complex accounting and tax matters into clear business insights for leadership.
Is This You?
- 5–10 years of accounting experience ideally in hardware, manufacturing, or hardware as a service companies
- Experience building an accounting function and defining core processes without a set roadmap
- Strong knowledge of inventory management, cost accounting, fixed asset capitalization/depreciation, and multi-state tax compliance
- Proven experience with ERP systems and accounting software; QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage, and cloud payroll systems preferred
- Advanced Excel/Google Sheets skills; comfortable with automation tools and workflows
- Skilled at balancing risk while ensuring accurate financial reporting
- Excellent communication skills with internal teams and external stakeholders
- Adaptable, proactive, and able to anticipate business needs
- Familiarity with external reporting and board-level communications
- Previous experience building or scaling accounting teams and processes
- Collaborative mindset, eager to support operational and strategic growth
- CPA required and audit/assurance background preferred
