Title: Head of Engineering (Founding Role)
Reporting Structure: Reports directly to the CEO
About Plexor
Plexor is redefining what’s possible for retail using computer vision and real-time analytics. Our AI-powered software works with existing cameras and helps operators reduce shrinkage, streamline operations, and enhance customer experience. As a team of builders with deep domain roots in the retail world, we’re obsessed with solving real problems for real people — store owners, workers, and their communities.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Head of Engineering to be our first in-house technical leader. This role is far more than a senior IC or team manager — it’s about becoming the architect of our product, the owner of our technical decisions, and eventually, the builder of our engineering team.
This is a high-agency role for someone who thrives in ambiguity, wants to ship impactful systems quickly, and can balance trade-offs between velocity, quality, and product-market fit. You’ll be our engineering conscience — setting the bar for technical excellence while keeping your hands dirty.
You’ll work closely with the exec team to turn ideas into scalable, customer-ready systems.
What You’ll Do
🏗️ Technical Leadership (70%)
- Lead and manage an outsourced team of 5–6 developers: guiding sprint planning, code quality, architecture choices, and sprint reviews
- Serve as the system architect — own our entire technical stack end-to-end (frontend, backend, AI/ML, infrastructure, and integrations)
- Implement and maintain our DevOps and CI/CD pipelines, code repositories, and deployable workflows
- Roll up your sleeves to debug, test, and support deployments in the field — you should be comfortable being the person who can fix what’s broken
- Make key build-vs-buy decisions, drive internal POCs, and define the long-term tech roadmap
🧪 Product & Operations (30%)
- Collaborate with product to shape features, prioritize what matters, and build MVPs that scale
- Serve as the key technical partner during third-party integrations (POS systems, APIs, certifications)
- Own the quality bar: from hands-on testing and user acceptance to debugging production systems
- Occasionally provide evening or weekend support during trials and major customer moments
What We’re Looking For
Must-Haves
- Full-stack expertise across modern tools (Python, Node.js, React) and comfort working across architecture, infrastructure, and AI integration
- Experience leading development teams, especially across in-house and outsourced models
- Comfort working in ambiguity, with the judgment to know when to move fast and when to invest in quality
- Experience deploying AI/ML systems, ideally in computer vision (YOLO, OpenCV, Hugging Face, VLMs, TensorFlow, etc.)
- Strong cloud infrastructure skills (AWS, GCP), including monitoring and potential edge device deployment
- Ability to work closely with product and ops teams — listening to end-user pain and shipping with empathy
Nice-to-Haves
- 5+ years of relevant experience in fast-paced, early-stage environments (but capability > years), being a former founder or building a MVP from the ground up is a major plus
- Experience with retail or high-throughput camera/video processing pipelines
- Deep respect for frontline workers and empathy for retail operators
- A product sense that aligns with startup urgency — “done” is better than “perfect”
Why Join Us
- Founding-level impact on company direction, product architecture, and team culture
- Significant equity stake — we want this to feel like your company too
- Remote-first flexibility with in-person ops exposure and customer impact
- High-agency, high-growth role with a clear path to CTO
- Work with a humble, principled team that genuinely cares about its customers and each other
