Title: Deal Desk Lead

Location: San Francisco, CA (Hybrid Preferred, Open to Remote)

Reporting Structure: CFO, Federico Lozano

Company Description

Seel is post-purchase infrastructure for retailers. Our embedded Return Assurance and Worry-Free Delivery products let shoppers buy peace of mind at checkout, while Seel underwrites the risk, manages refunds and reverse logistics, and recovers value through resale and refurbishment of returned goods. Seel also sells a Performance Dashboard analytics product to enterprise merchants. We serve thousands of merchants, from emerging DTC brands to multi-billion-dollar marketplaces, and we're expanding into predictive, data-driven risk reduction for retailers.

Responsibilities

Seel is hiring a Deal Desk & Unit Economics Lead: a driven, hands-on owner of GTM and unit economics, with 5+ years of experience thinking in CAC, LTV, and payback across a go-to-market motion. Deal structuring is a real part of this role, not the whole of it: you will get on calls with merchants and their CFOs to work through pricing and deal terms directly, and you will use those deals as one input into the unit economics you own end to end. This is a business-driven role: you will build the models behind our commercial deals and our broader GTM metrics, carry a lighter FP&A footprint contributing to the company-wide model when needed, and work fluently with Claude and other AI tools, including helping build out Seel's agentic AI workforce inside finance.

  • GTM and unit economics: Own CAC, LTV, payback period, and sales and marketing efficiency metrics (magic number, funnel conversion, merchant acquisition cost) across Seel's go-to-market motion. This is the core of the role.
  •  Ecommerce deal modeling: Build pricing and take-rate models for prospective and existing merchant deals, factoring GMV, return rates, AOV, category mix, and loss-ratio assumptions specific to each merchant's business, feeding directly into the unit economics above.
  • Deal and merchant calls: Join calls with merchants and their CFOs and finance leads to work through pricing, risk sharing, and deal structure directly. You're a business partner in the room, not just the person who models the deal afterward.
  • GMV and return-rate modeling: Build merchant-level and portfolio-level GMV forecasts and return-rate assumptions by category and vertical that feed directly into deal economics.
  • Underwriting metrics: Track loss ratio, claims frequency and severity, and take rate by product line (Return Assurance, Worry-Free Delivery, Performance Dashboard) to keep deal assumptions grounded in actual portfolio performance.
  • GTM partnership: Be the modeling partner to Sales and Marketing on CAC payback, deal economics, and merchant acquisition efficiency, and to Risk/Underwriting and Operations on pricing and merchant-deal economics.
  • Agentic AI workforce: Help build and manage Seel's AI agent workforce inside finance, deploying Claude-based agents to run recurring reporting, scenario analysis, and variance write-ups, not just using AI as a personal productivity tool.
  • FP&A support: Contribute to Seel's core financial model, forecast cycles, and monthly variance analysis as needed, partnering with Accounting on revenue recognition and reserve treatment. This is a smaller part of the role than unit economics and deal work.

Is this you?

  • 5+ years in GTM finance, deal modeling, or a related analytical role at high-growth startups. Marketplace or fintech experience broadly is a strong fit; ecommerce or insurtech-specific background is a plus, not a requirement.
  • Genuinely driven by GTM and unit economics: you think in CAC, LTV, payback, and magic number, and you want to own those numbers end to end, not just report on them.
  • Deep fluency with GTM unit economics: CAC, LTV, payback period, and contribution margin, and how they interact in a company P&L. Ecommerce-specific fluency, such as GMV, return rates, and AOV, is a plus and can be picked up quickly on the job.
  • Expert-level deal modeling: you can build a merchant-specific deal model from scratch, defend every assumption, and stress-test it against different pricing and risk-sharing structures.
  • Business-driven and commercially minded: comfortable running point on calls with merchants and CFOs to discuss deal terms and pricing directly, not just building the model after the deal is done.
  • Working familiarity with GAAP accounting and company-level FP&A, enough to contribute to the core model when needed. This is not the core of the role.
  • Demonstrated, hands-on fluency with Claude or comparable AI tools for modeling, analysis, and reporting workflows. You should be able to speak concretely about how you use AI to move faster, and ideally have experience standing up AI agents to own pieces of a finance workflow, not just personal use.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and imperfect data. Startup finance means building the plane while flying it.
  • Sharp, structured communicator who can present deal and GTM economics and recommendations to merchants and a CFO without hand-holding.
  • Advanced Excel/Google Sheets; SQL or BI tool experience (Looker, Mode, or similar) strongly preferred for pulling your own data.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ecommerce or insurtech-specific background, including exposure to GMV, return rates, loss ratios, reserves, or claims triangles. Genuinely rare to find and easy to train on top of strong GTM instincts.
  • Experience partnering directly with Sales or Marketing on GTM efficiency metrics, such as CAC payback, magic number, sales rep productivity, or LTV modeling in a marketplace or platform business.
  • Experience modeling reverse logistics, resale, or refurbishment economics for returned inventory.
  • Experience with NetSuite or a comparable ERP, and with BigQuery or a similar warehouse.

#Perks

  • $170-200K OTE
  • Equity in a highly successful Series B startup with exceptional customer retention
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • You'll work closely with the CFO, Sales, and Marketing on the metrics and merchant deals that drive growth, with real ownership over unit economics, deal modeling, and how an agentic AI workforce reshapes finance at Seel.
