Title: General Manager, New York City

Location: New York City (on-site required)

The Company

This company operates in the public sanitation space, providing modular restroom facilities to cities, transit agencies, and public institutions. It has an established footprint across multiple major U.S. markets.

The GM role is positioned to be one of the highest-impact positions the company is hiring for this year. The right candidate will have the opportunity to shape how the company operates in New York City and build a team from the ground up.

The company name is confidential at this stage. Candidates who advance past the initial screen will be asked to sign an NDA prior to further disclosure until market launch is public.

Why This Role is Exciting

  • Build something that matters: NYC has one of the most acute public restroom shortages of any major city. You’ll be the person who helps change that—at scale, in the public eye, and in partnership with public agencies
  • Own the whole market: As GM, you’ll have end-to-end ownership of the NYC market — operations, day-to-day agency relationships, and expansion. Lead a market in one of the world’s most complex and rewarding operating environments.
  • High visibility, high impact: NYC will be the company’s highest-profile market. You’ll represent the company with city agencies, elected officials and community groups. The work you do here will shape how cities across the country think about the public restrooms standard.
  • Growth trajectory: The company is exceptionally high growth, and NYC is central to that growth. As the market matures, this role has real potential to grow.
  • A culture worth joining: The company has a 4.4 out of 5 employee satisfaction score and a mission-driven culture that promotes collaboration, diversity and individual growth.

About the Role

The General Manager, NYC is a unique role within the company’s organization. The NYC GM sits at the intersection of operations and account management. You will report to the VP of Operations and build and lead a growing NYC-based team including a field team with management support.

You will provide company leadership in New York City: building the operational infrastructure needed to deploy and maintain our modular restroom units across one of the world's most demanding urban environments, while protecting and growing critical relationships with the client and key stakeholders. Success in this role requires equal parts operational discipline, authentic relationship-building, and strategic growth mindset.

Responsibilities

1) P&L Ownership & Market Performance

  • Track and manage to KPIs including uptime, response times, unit density, cleanliness rating, labor costs, and customer satisfaction metrics that matter to both the company and client agency.
  • Support renewals and expansion with a focus on increasing unit density and efficiency; build the ongoing business case for growth.
  • Partner with product to surface high-impact iteration opportunities where NYC’s demands reveal ways to make restrooms better, safer, and/or more efficient.

2) Operations & Field Management

  • Lead day-to-day field operations, building and managing a field team to maintain exceptional cleanliness, uptime, and user experience, while embodying our mission and culture in every interaction with the City.
  • Implement and adapt company operations playbooks to the NYC context, building from proven procedures and developing localized SOPs that account for NYC's unique regulatory, logistical, and cultural environment.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain field staff in one of the country's most competitive labor markets. You are a people leader — not just a task manager — who invests in your team's growth, sets clear expectations, and creates an environment where people want to stay and do their best work.
  • Own incident management and escalation, serving as the decision-maker and point of contact during high-visibility incidents including outages, vandalism, or safety events. Be reachable 24/7 for operational emergencies as required by contract terms — this is a hands-on role in a city that never sleeps.
  • Ensure compliance with all NYC requirements including response time, reporting, documentation, and escalation protocols.

3) Government, Stakeholder & Client Relations

  • Own day-to-day relationships with operational contacts across NYC agencies, ensuring seamless service delivery, managing issue escalation, providing proactive communication and building strong relationships. This role operates in close partnership with the COO, who brings deep involvement in the political and strategic dimensions of the City relationship, creating a powerful two-person front for the market.
  • Lead permitting and site placement negotiations, understanding the regulatory, political, and community dynamics that shape where modular restrooms can go and how quickly.
  • Communicate company value proactively through a mix of quantitative reporting, qualitative storytelling, and regular relationship check-ins, keeping NYC agencies engaged and informed.
  • Represent the company in public forums including select agency meetings, community board presentations, etc..
  • Keep internal stakeholders aligned, raising threats, challenges, and opportunities transparently and in a timely manner.

Is This You?

  • Deep NYC knowledge: You know how this City works—operationally and culturally. You have existing relationships or the demonstrated ability to build them quickly across City agencies, elected offices, and community organizations.
  • Operational track record: You have managed logistics, field operations, or public space programs in NYC. You know what good operations look like and how to build them.
  • Political savvy: You can navigate government relationships without being naïve or transactional. You understand that trust is built over time and that the best outcomes come from genuine partnership.
  • Financial fluency: You are comfortable reading a budget, and making trade-offs between cost and quality under pressure.
  • Strong communicator: You communicate clearly and comprehensively, keep to the right messaging, and make sure the people who need information have it. You are transparent with stakeholders, comfortable saying "I don't know but I'll find out," and reliable about following up.
  • Entrepreneurial DNA: You thrive in ambiguity, move quickly, and don’t wait for perfect information. You are a builder.
  • Mission-aligned: You genuinely believe that public restroom access is one of the most essential issues in NYC and you want to work to change it for the better!

Education / Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in operations, public space management, or a closely related field, with a strong preference for experience in a NYC-focused park conservancy, BID, nonprofit, or a company operating in the NYC public sector.
