CLIENT SUMMARY

Turtlebox Audio is a fast-growing outdoor audio company headquartered in Houston, Texas. Founded in 2012 by four friends passionate about sound and adventure, Turtlebox produces rugged, premium portable speakers designed to withstand extreme conditions and elevate any outdoor experience.

With momentum-driven growth and a passionate, community-minded culture, Turtlebox is more than just a speaker brand—it’s a lifestyle. The team is composed of energetic, outdoors-loving individuals who bring creativity and grit to work each day. The company hosts regular live music sessions, sponsors major outdoor festivals, and creates a workplace where employees feel connected to both the brand and each other.

While culture is fun and casual, Turtlebox is entering a season of significant professionalization. With new products launching and a growing team, the company is building its product function from the ground up. The Director of Product will be foundational to this evolution.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Turtlebox is seeking a Director of Product to lead the newly forming product department. This person will initially be hands-on across all aspects of product development—overseeing quality updates, coordinating future initiatives, and managing cross-functional collaboration with both internal teams and external suppliers.

The ideal candidate brings experience in outdoor electronics, consumer audio, or rugged product industries. They are energized by ambiguity, ready to build systems from scratch, and comfortable wearing multiple hats. Over time, this leader will help scale the product team and shape the org chart based on strategic needs and future growth.

POSITION KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and build the Product department: Oversee two Product Managers (one for existing products, one for new development), and eventually expand the team to include sourcing, industrial design, engineering, and quality specialists.

  • Own and manage the product lifecycle from ideation through delivery—including roadmapping, prototyping, validation, launch, and iteration.

  • Create and implement a scalable product development framework, balancing speed with quality, and building processes where none exist today.

  • Prioritize and improve product quality by gathering feedback from customer service and warranty claims, engaging suppliers, and putting systems in place for long-term quality tracking and resolution.

  • Oversee testing and innovation at "The Forge"—the in-house facility for new product testing and experimentation.

  • Coordinate regularly with Sales, Marketing, Finance, Legal, and Operations to align product decisions with branding, revenue, margin, compliance, and supply chain priorities.

  • Track and analyze market trends, consumer insights, and competitive benchmarks to ensure Turtlebox continues to innovate and differentiate in the outdoor audio space.

  • Lead communication and planning with overseas contract manufacturers, balancing cost, quality, and delivery timelines.

  • Provide weekly reporting to executive leadership, sharing updates on product progress, risks, and opportunities.

  • Serve as a culture contributor and organizational architect, helping shape a high-performing, collaborative, and creative product team in a fast-moving environment.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE NEEDED

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 12–20+ years of product development experience, including full lifecycle ownership from concept through launch.
  • 3–10+ years of experience leading cross-functional teams or direct reports in a product, engineering, or operations environment.
  • Background in outdoor electronics, consumer audio, rugged tech, or similar industries with experience navigating design, durability, and usability challenges.
  • Strong experience with contract manufacturing and supplier relationships, including navigating international production and quality assurance.
  • Proven ability to build systems and processes from the ground up, particularly in fast-paced, high-growth companies.
  • Excellent communicator and collaborator, with experience aligning product work across Marketing, Sales, and Executive stakeholders.
  • A natural leader who can both set vision and dig into execution; comfortable toggling between strategic planning and tactical fire-fighting.
  • Demonstrated success managing a roadmap, prioritizing trade-offs, and delivering quality products on time and on budget.
  • Technically fluent—able to communicate with designers and engineers and translate needs across business functions.
  • Comfortable in ambiguity, energized by growth, and capable of thriving in a low-structure, startup-like environment.
