Goebel Construction | Richmond, CA

Goebel Construction is a third-generation, family-owned heavy civil contractor serving Northern California. Founded in 1976, Goebel has built a nearly 50-year reputation for delivering complex civil construction projects with a strong commitment to safety, quality, integrity, and doing business the right way.

Today, Goebel is entering an exciting stage of growth. The company is expanding its presence in Caltrans, federal, utility, and private infrastructure work while intentionally maintaining the entrepreneurial, family-oriented culture that has made the business successful. Unlike larger, highly bureaucratic contractors, Goebel operates with a flat structure where experienced leaders are trusted to make decisions, solve problems, and take ownership of their work.

Goebel is seeking an experienced Paving Superintendent to help lead Caltrans and heavy civil projects throughout Northern California. This individual will be a key field leader responsible for connecting project management with field operations and ensuring projects are executed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.

This is an opportunity for an accomplished paving professional who wants to join a growing contractor, have a meaningful voice in how projects are run, and help build Goebel's expanding Caltrans operation.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead day-to-day field operations for Caltrans, paving, roadway, and heavy civil construction projects.
  • Plan and coordinate labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and production activities.
  • Serve as a key liaison between Project Managers, owners, Caltrans inspectors, subcontractors, Foremen, and field crews.
  • Ensure projects meet Goebel's standards for safety, quality, production, schedule, compliance, and profitability.
  • Lead and mentor Foremen while earning the trust and respect of experienced field personnel.
  • Proactively identify field challenges and develop solutions before they impact production.
  • Ensure compliance with Caltrans specifications, DOT requirements, quality-control standards, environmental requirements, and company safety policies.
  • Provide constructability input, production rates, equipment recommendations, and field expertise during estimating and preconstruction.
  • Build strong relationships with owners and inspectors through honest, direct communication.
  • Help Goebel continue building its Caltrans capabilities through successful project execution.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is a proven paving and heavy civil field leader who knows how to run work, understands Caltrans requirements, and can command the respect of experienced crews without leading through ego.

  • 10+ years of heavy civil construction experience.
  • 5+ years of Caltrans or comparable DOT project experience.
  • Strong paving and roadway construction background.
  • Experience with grading, underground utilities, and broader civil infrastructure work.
  • Experience leading field crews and supervising multiple Foremen.
  • Thorough knowledge of Caltrans specifications, inspection processes, and quality-control requirements.
  • Strong understanding of construction safety with a commitment to doing things the right way.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate with owners, inspectors, subcontractors, Project Managers, and field personnel.
  • Strong planning and problem-solving ability with an understanding of production, equipment, and constructability.
  • A leadership style built around accountability, integrity, communication, and technical credibility.

Why Goebel?

For an experienced Caltrans paving leader, this is an opportunity to join a contractor with the resources and project pipeline to do meaningful work without getting lost inside a massive organization.

Goebel is intentionally growing its Caltrans business and wants this Superintendent to be part of that growth—not simply fill a seat on one project. You'll have the autonomy to lead, the ability to influence how work gets executed, and an opportunity to grow alongside a company that wants to become one of Northern California's premier heavy civil contractors while preserving its family-owned culture.
