POSITION OBJECTIVE

C.W. Matthews is seeking an Assistant Controller to join their accounting team. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead and develop a team while working closely with the VP of Accounting and CFO. The Assistant Controller will oversee a key accounting function and department, such as accounts payable, job costing, or subcontractor payments. This role will provide guidance and support to both direct reports and executives. Given the dynamic nature of the position, the ideal candidate must be highly personal, adaptable, capable of multitasking, and comfortable working with individuals across various levels of the organization. POSITION KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage a department to ensure smooth operations and support professional development.
• Handle quarterly closings, compile financial statements, and assist with audits.
• Optimize accounting procedures and strengthen internal controls.
• Partner with VPs, operations teams, and IT to improve financial reporting and system efficiencies.
• Oversee cost structures, subcontractor payments, and contract revenue processing.
• Utilize Vista (Trimble product) and Excel to analyze and report financial data.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE NEEDED

• CPA certification (or actively pursuing CPA) required
• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
• Understanding and experience in construction accounting; heavy civil is a plus
• 5-7+ years in an accounting role, ideally within construction
• Strong leadership and team management abilities
• Dynamic, adaptable, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Strong interpersonal skills, able to meet employees at their level
• Prior management experience is a plus
