A big challenge, with real-world impact


Heavy metals and other pollutants do not stay in a lab notebook. They affect water systems, soils, industrial processes and the environment around us. Better sensing technologies can enable earlier detection, better decisions and more effective action. But only if they work beyond controlled laboratory conditions.


iGii is already building strong momentum in this space. The team has produced highly promising results with Gii, its advanced 3D carbon nanomaterial, and is expanding applications for targets including copper, lead and wider environmental contaminants.


You will join a growing R&D team at a defining stage of the company’s journey. This is not a blank-sheet project, nor is it a role where you will be asked to follow a rigid protocol. You will have the freedom and responsibility to help determine which ideas are technically viable, which should progress and how they can become robust, commercially relevant sensing technologies.


What you will do


You will own defined sensor-development workstreams, from early feasibility and proof of concept through to validation, scale-up readiness and transfer into product development.


This is a senior, laboratory-based role. You will be expected to stay close to the science, develop sound experimental strategies and make evidence-based technical decisions that influence project direction.


Your work will include:


- Designing, executing and interpreting electrochemical experiments for heavy metals and wider environmental contaminants

- Developing sensing approaches using techniques such as ASV, SWV, DPV, CV and LSV

- Taking technologies from early feasibility through to robust, reproducible performance

- Testing sensors in real-world matrices, including water, wastewater, soil extracts and industrial effluents

- Understanding matrix effects, interference, selectivity, stability and reproducibility, then turning those findings into practical improvements

- Defining clear performance criteria and making sound recommendations on whether projects should move forward

- Working closely with R&D, Engineering, Product, Quality and Commercial colleagues to ensure technical development is connected to genuine customer needs

- Supporting best practice in electrochemical testing and contributing technical guidance within the team


What you can add


You are an electrochemist who wants their science to travel further than a publication.


A PhD or specialist Master’s degree will be valuable, but this role is about more than academic achievement. We are looking for someone who understands the difference between an elegant result and a useful solution: someone who can make the leap from a controlled experiment to a sensor that works with real samples, in real conditions, for a real user.


You may have developed technologies in industry, a start-up, scale-up, spin-out or commercially focused research environment. You may have contributed to patents, proof-of-concept programmes, field trials, product development or technology transfer. Whatever your route, you will bring a practical mindset, commercial awareness and the determination to make things work.


You will ideally offer:


- Hands-on experience in electrochemical environmental or heavy metal sensing

- Strong experimental design, data analysis and technical decision-making skills

- Experience translating laboratory findings into product-development, validation or commercialisation recommendations

- Knowledge of analytical performance criteria, including sensitivity, selectivity, stability, limits of detection and matrix effects

- Experience with quality systems, robust documentation and traceable experimental records

- Confidence collaborating with scientific, engineering, quality and commercial stakeholders


Experience with electroplating, electrodeposition, reference methods such as ICP-MS, ICP-OES or AAS, and IP generation would be valuable.
