Controller + Real Estate Development + Omaha
Are you a property accounting professional who wants more than simply reviewing someone else’s work? This is an opportunity to own the accounting function, stay close to the numbers, and help build the processes behind an evolving real estate operation.
Our client is looking for a hands-on Controller who can confidently manage the day-to-day accounting while also bringing the leadership, structure, and process improvements expected at the Controller level. This is a true working Controller role where you’ll prepare financials, close the books, make entries in the property accounting system, and serve as the final checkpoint for accurate financial reporting.
What You'll Do
- Own the monthly close process and preparation of accurate financial statements and reporting packages
- Serve as the final accounting review before financial information reaches leadership
- Prepare journal entries and work directly within the property accounting system
- Review financial performance, investigate variances, and ensure the underlying accounting is accurate
- Oversee day-to-day property accounting activities, including general ledger, reconciliations, AP/AR, and related functions
- Support audit, lender reporting, tax preparation, and other financial reporting requirements
- Establish, document, and improve accounting policies, procedures, controls, and workflows
- Help create scalable accounting processes as the business continues to evolve
- Partner with leadership to provide meaningful financial information and insights
- Lead two remote accounting team members while remaining actively involved in the work
What They're Looking For
- Strong property accounting experience with the ability to independently own the accounting cycle
- Approximately 5–7+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Hands-on experience with dedicated property accounting software; Yardi experience is strongly preferred
- Previous leadership or team oversight experience
- Experience developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures
- Strong understanding of month-end close, financial statement preparation, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting
- Ability to work independently with a direct supervisor who is not located onsite
- Comfortable operating as both a leader and a doer—you aren't afraid to get into the system and handle the accounting yourself
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred
The Opportunity
This isn't a Controller position where you'll spend your day removed from the details. You'll have visibility, autonomy, and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on how the accounting function operates.
If you're ready to take ownership of the numbers and help build the accounting infrastructure behind them, we'd like to talk.
