Director of Accounting + Mission-Driven Nonprofit + Lincoln
Are you a strategic and collaborative accounting leader who wants to make an impact in the nonprofit sector? Our client is seeking a Director of Accounting to lead financial operations, oversee internal controls, and support a growing network of affiliate funds, donors, and strategic partnerships. This is a key leadership role with the potential to step into a Controller position in the future.
What You'll Do:
- Ensure accurate accounting for the organization, its subsidiary, and affiliated funds
- Develop and manage annual budgets in collaboration with leadership
- Maintain effective accounting policies, systems, and internal controls
- Provide timely, clear, and user-friendly financial reporting to stakeholders
- Partner with the CPA firm to support audit and tax compliance processes
- Ensure compliance with federal grant financial reporting requirements
- Oversee accounting and reporting for all Public-Private Partnerships
- Lead the preparation and submission of regulatory filings and tax returns
- Supervise, mentor, and cross-train accounting team members
- Train staff and volunteers on key accounting principles and practices
- Serve as a trusted resource for internal teams, fund committees, and donors
- Create and interpret ad-hoc reports to support strategic decisions
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA strongly preferred; public accounting background a plus
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience
- Experience in nonprofit, healthcare, or family foundation environments preferred
- Deep understanding of GAAP and technical accounting
- Strong communication skills—able to translate complex financials for non-financial audiences
- Solutions-focused mindset and proven leadership experience
- High attention to detail with a strategic, big-picture approach
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel occasionally within Nebraska
