Director of Accounting + Mission-Driven Nonprofit + Lincoln

Are you a strategic and collaborative accounting leader who wants to make an impact in the nonprofit sector? Our client is seeking a Director of Accounting to lead financial operations, oversee internal controls, and support a growing network of affiliate funds, donors, and strategic partnerships. This is a key leadership role with the potential to step into a Controller position in the future.

What You'll Do:

• Ensure accurate accounting for the organization, its subsidiary, and affiliated funds
• Develop and manage annual budgets in collaboration with leadership
• Maintain effective accounting policies, systems, and internal controls
• Provide timely, clear, and user-friendly financial reporting to stakeholders
• Partner with the CPA firm to support audit and tax compliance processes
• Ensure compliance with federal grant financial reporting requirements
• Oversee accounting and reporting for all Public-Private Partnerships
• Lead the preparation and submission of regulatory filings and tax returns
• Supervise, mentor, and cross-train accounting team members
• Train staff and volunteers on key accounting principles and practices
• Serve as a trusted resource for internal teams, fund committees, and donors
• Create and interpret ad-hoc reports to support strategic decisions

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• CPA strongly preferred; public accounting background a plus
• 7–10 years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience
• Experience in nonprofit, healthcare, or family foundation environments preferred
• Deep understanding of GAAP and technical accounting
• Strong communication skills—able to translate complex financials for non-financial audiences
• Solutions-focused mindset and proven leadership experience
• High attention to detail with a strategic, big-picture approach
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel occasionally within Nebraska
