Electrical Designer – Job Description, Functions, Responsibilities & Expectations
Job Description Summary:
Electrical Designer has proven experience designing and analyzing electrical systems. This
includes directly working on drawings, writing field survey reports, and performing design
calculations. Electrical systems generally include power, lighting, communication, electronic
security, and fire alarm systems. In addition, the Senior Electrical Designer is responsible for
delivering coordinated design plans and documents under the supervision of the Electrical
Engineer.
Day-to-day Functions:
(a) Provide electrical design solutions using the industry accepted engineering design best
practices.
(b) Perform design calculations (load calculations, wire and conduit sizing, voltage drop)
and electrical schedules (panelboards and light fixtures) with little to no supervision.
(c) Perform lighting design, including fixture selection, lighting controls and photometrics.
(d) Prepare low-voltage systems design, including fire alarm, security, and controls.
(e) Utilize Microsoft Office products, CADD, BIM/Revit, and other industry software.
Design Responsibilities:
(a) Actively participate in attending design and coordination meetings.
(b) Knowledgeable in power distribution, including single line, schematic, and riser
diagrams.
(c) Execute construction phase review services consisting of submittal review, RFI
responses, and changes.
(d) Mentor junior staff (designer).
(e) Conduct field surveys and construction phase support.

(a) Self-driven to complete design tasks for projects as well as coordinate design issues
with the Electrical Engineer, team members and outside design consultants.

(d) Demonstrate engineering design knowledge and skills.

Competencies, Education and Experience:
(a) Preferred Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering or
equivalent.
a. Passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or
looking to take in near future.
(b) Preferred Qualifications/Certifications:
a. LEED Green Associate (LEED GA)
(c) Minimum three (3) years of industry related engineering design experience.
