Job Summary

The Survey / CAD Designer is responsible for preparing detailed survey drawings, base maps, and design plans using CAD software while working closely with survey crews, engineers, and project managers. This role supports land development, transportation, and infrastructure projects by converting field data into accurate digital drawings and assisting with design documentation.


Key Responsibilities


  • Prepare survey drawings including boundary surveys, topographic surveys, ALTA surveys, and construction staking plans.
  • Process field data from survey crews and incorporate it into CAD drawings.
  • Develop base maps and existing conditions drawings for engineering design projects.
  • Produce plan sets for land development, roadway, utility, and infrastructure projects.
  • Create alignments, surfaces, profiles, and cross sections using CAD design software.
  • Assist engineers and project managers with conceptual layouts and preliminary designs.
  • Maintain drawing standards, layering systems, and file organization.
  • Coordinate with survey field crews to verify data accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
  • Prepare final deliverables including plats, exhibits, and construction documents.
  • Perform quality control checks on drawings and calculations.


Required Qualifications


  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2–7+ years of experience in surveying or civil design drafting.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D (required).
  • Experience processing survey data and creating surfaces, contours, and linework.
  • Understanding of boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and construction layout.
  • Ability to interpret field notes, sketches, and engineering plans.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with survey data collectors and processing software (Carlson, Trimble Business Center, etc.).
  • Familiarity with land development, roadway design, and utility layouts.
  • Knowledge of local surveying standards and regulations.
  • Survey Technician certification or progress toward Professional Land Surveyor (PLS).
