Commissioning Engineer

Mission-critical facilities only perform if the systems behind them do. This role turns design intent into proven performance—startup, functional testing, and documented acceptance that owners can trust when uptime, safety, and compliance are non-negotiable. You will be the engineer who closes the gap between drawings and a facility that actually works.

Performance Objectives

  • Lead commissioning for mechanical, electrical, and controls systems so each system meets design intent, sequence of operations, and owner acceptance criteria before turnover.
  • Build and execute functional test procedures that expose deficiencies early and produce a clear, closed punch list before substantial completion.
  • Direct startup and integrated systems testing with contractors and controls vendors so interdependent systems operate as designed under real operating conditions.
  • Issue commissioning reports, issues logs, and closeout packages that give owners and operators a complete, auditable record of performance.
  • Resolve field discrepancies with design and construction teams within schedule and budget, without compromising code, safety, or performance requirements.
  • Train facilities staff on system operation so the building performs after you leave, not only on test day.

Environment & Resources

You will work with a small, senior engineering team on complex facilities for telecommunications, finance, healthcare, higher education, and government clients. Expect direct access to project engineers and designers, owner representatives, and commissioning instrumentation. You will report to the project engineering lead and own the commissioning scope, schedule, and documentation for assigned projects—often on active construction sites as well as in the office.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent commissioning experience on complex facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and run functional performance tests and to document results that stand up to owner and authority review.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, electrical distribution, emergency power, and building controls sequences typical of mission-critical or institutional buildings.
  • Experience coordinating contractors, controls vendors, and design teams through startup, deficiency closeout, and turnover.
  • Professional Engineer license, CxA, or equivalent commissioning credential preferred; willingness to pursue one if not already held.
  • Ability to read construction documents, work safely on active sites, and communicate findings clearly in writing.

Role Selling Points

  • Work on facilities where system performance is the product—not commodity tenant fit-outs.
  • A quality-driven practice that treats documentation and repeatable process as part of engineering, not paperwork after the fact.
  • Broad industry exposure and real ownership of commissioning outcomes on a compact team.
  • National project reach from a focused engineering practice, with room to shape how commissioning is delivered.

If you want your work measured by systems that pass, not meetings that end, apply with a short note on a commissioning effort you led to acceptance.
