Landscape Architect

Landscape architects design and plan outdoor spaces, such as parks, gardens, playgrounds, and residential areas, using their knowledge of plants and trees, architectural and design skills, and an understanding of land use. They use computer-aided design programs to create plans, designs, and drawings of these spaces, and they also consider the topography of the land, views, and how indoor and outdoor spaces flow together. Landscape architects' responsibilities include: 

  • Planning: Planning the locations of buildings, roads, walkways, flowers, shrubs, and trees 
  • Designing: Designing hardscape features like patios, pergolas, and retaining walls 
  • Surveying: Surveying sites and seeking the opinions of locals and others who use the site 
  • Advising: Advising on environmental conservation and reviewing the environmental impacts of construction projects 
  • Coordinating: Coordinating project plans with other professionals, such as architects, civil engineers, and town planners 
  • Monitoring: Monitoring progress to ensure the landscape is taking shape properly 
  • Presenting: Presenting proposals to clients for approval and agreeing on timescales 
  • Writing: Writing reports and contracts
