This role focuses on ensuring that fire safety systems such as sprinklers, alarms, smoke control systems, and fire suppression systems are integrated effectively within the MEP infrastructure of a building.

The professional will collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and local authorities to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations, codes, and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. System Design and Planning:
  • Design and plan fire protection systems (e.g., sprinkler systems, smoke detection, fire alarms, emergency lighting) in compliance with NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), local fire codes, and building regulations.
  • Coordinate fire protection system integration with other MEP systems such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structural designs.
  • Conduct fire risk assessments and site surveys to determine fire protection requirements.
  1. System Installation and Implementation:
  • Supervise or oversee the installation of fire protection systems on construction projects.
  • Ensure that fire protection systems are installed according to design specifications and safety standards.
  • Work closely with contractors and subcontractors during the installation phase to ensure quality and compliance.
  1. Testing and Commissioning:
  • Perform system tests to verify the proper operation of fire protection systems, such as pressure testing of sprinklers and alarm functionality checks.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with installed systems.
  • Ensure all systems are fully functional and compliant before handover to the client.
  1. Maintenance and Inspections:
  • Conduct regular maintenance and inspections of fire protection systems to ensure continued operational effectiveness and compliance.
  • Schedule and perform routine fire drills, inspections, and preventative maintenance procedures.
  1. Regulatory Compliance and Documentation:
  • Ensure all fire protection systems meet regulatory codes and safety standards, including local, state, and national fire codes (e.g., NFPA, IFC, IBC).
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of designs, testing, maintenance, and inspections.
  • Assist in obtaining approvals and certifications from local fire marshals or other authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ).
  1. Collaboration and Coordination:
  • Work with other MEP engineers (HVAC, electrical, plumbing) to design coordinated systems that optimize building performance while maintaining fire safety standards.
  • Collaborate with architects, construction managers, and other stakeholders to address fire protection needs within the broader building design.
  1. Client and Stakeholder Interaction:
  • Provide guidance and support to clients regarding fire protection system selection, installation, and maintenance.
  • Offer recommendations to enhance fire safety and reduce risk exposure.
  • Address any client concerns or inquiries regarding system performance or compliance.
  1. Training and Education:
  • Educate team members, clients, and contractors about fire protection system best practices and safety protocols.
  • Stay updated on the latest fire protection technologies, standards, and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Certification in fire protection or fire safety design (e.g., NICET, CFPS) is a plus.
  • Experience:
  • Proven experience (typically 3–5 years) in fire protection design, installation, or maintenance within the MEP industry.
  • Experience with the installation, testing, and commissioning of fire protection systems, including sprinklers, fire alarms, smoke control, and suppression systems.
  • Familiarity with relevant fire safety codes and standards (e.g., NFPA, IBC, IFC, local regulations).
  • Skills:
  • Strong technical knowledge of fire protection systems and their integration with MEP systems.
  • Proficiency in fire protection design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, HydraCAD).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with clients, contractors, and project teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional engineering license (PE) in Fire Protection Engineering or related field.
  • Additional certifications, such as NICET Level III or IV in Fire Protection Engineering Technology.
  • Knowledge of building management systems (BMS) and their integration with fire alarm and suppression systems.
