Substation Engineer

Engineering company in San Diego with utility, municipality, and government contracts focusing on electrical and power engineering.


We are currently seeking an experienced Electrical with a BSEE degree or equivalent, PE licensed in the State of California, and have 4+ years of recent relevant experience.


Duties and responsibilities of an Electrical Engineer


•Prepare reports that present technical and project information in a clear and concise manner to meet client requirements.

•Engineer HV substation projects from conceptual design through construction.

•Prepare electrical physical design packages consisting of One-line, Site Plan, Electrical Plan & Sections, Grounding Plan & Details, Conduit Plan and Details, Control House Plan, Control House Grounding Plan & Details, Lighting Plan, Lightning Protection Plan, and Bill of Materials (BOM).

•Coordinate with Designers and Engineers of other disciplines to complete deliverables.

•Interpret and incorporate vendor information into design deliverables.

•Perform QA/QC of electrical engineering design packages.

•Provide regular progress updates and reporting on project deliverables.

•Provide engineering and technical support, and reviews to field crews during construction.

Qualifications of an Electrical Engineer


•BS Electrical Engineering – required.

•Professional Engineer (P.E.)

•Minimum four years of experience required

•Proficient in various areas of substation engineering such as civil, structural, P&C, and Studies.

•Strong understanding of substation grounding, lightning protection and illumination studies.

•Ability to visualize and evaluate equipment details, phase-to-ground, phase-to-phase clearances, and drawing relationships.

•Knowledge of industry specifications for HV electrical equipment.

•Familiar with international and North American electrical codes and regulations.

•Proven ability to work collaboratively with multi-discipline teams to deliver projects on time and on budget.

•U.S. Citizenship or Legal Permanent Resident status required.

•Understanding of Power Systems analysis and related software packages (e.g. ASPEN, ETAP, SKM, etc.)

•Experience with grounding analysis software such as SES.

•Familiarity with AutoCAD.
