Apply for this job

Ready to operate critical building systems in a rapidly expanding industrial bakery environment? This is your opportunity to leverage your ammonia refrigeration and boiler expertise in a facility where infrastructure reliability directly impacts production success.

Pave Talent is hiring on behalf of our client, an established mid-size food manufacturing facility in Frederick, MD known for their collaborative, growth-focused, and safety-first culture. With a major facility expansion underway that's doubling production capacity from four to eight lines, this growing company is building their utilities team to support long-term operational excellence.

As the Building Systems Technician, you'll be the backbone of facility infrastructure, ensuring refrigeration, HVAC, boiler, and compressed air systems operate at peak performance. Your expertise will directly enable production reliability by maintaining the environmental controls and utilities that keep operations running 24/7. This isn't just a maintenance role - it's a critical position where your technical skills prevent costly downtime and ensure product quality through precise environmental control.

Your Responsibilities:

Operate and maintain industrial ammonia and CO2 refrigeration systems including compressors, pumps, fans, heat exchangers, glycol systems, and auxiliary equipment to ensure optimal cooling performance across production and storage areas.

Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on boiler systems, air compressors, hot/cold water systems, soft water conditioners, HVAC systems, and power utilities equipment following manufacturer specifications and safety protocols.

Conduct daily facility rounds to observe and record temperatures, humidity levels, and system performance data, making minor adjustments to maintain environmental parameters within specification.

Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical components including motors, motor starters, switches, solenoids, pumps, refrigeration valves, and compressors using schematics and diagnostic tools to restore systems to operational status.

Execute water treatment analysis, boiler control testing, and combustion efficiency monitoring to optimize system performance and extend equipment lifespan.

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying process enhancements, recommending system upgrades, and prioritizing work assignments to minimize downtime to production and refrigeration systems.

Monitor automated building systems using computerized maintenance management software (SAP preferred) to document work performed, track parts usage, and maintain accurate maintenance records.

Direct and coordinate contractor activities when external support is required for specialized repairs or installations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Ammonia Operator certification (RETA or state-issued) with hands-on experience operating industrial ammonia refrigeration systems
  • Willingness to obtain Boiler Operator certification (Grade 5) within first 90 days of employment
  • 4-5+ years of experience maintaining building utilities systems in industrial or manufacturing environments
  • Proven ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&ID drawings, and mechanical blueprints for troubleshooting
  • Hands-on experience safely replacing mechanical and electrical components on refrigeration, HVAC, and boiler systems
  • Strong understanding of ammonia refrigerant properties, safety protocols, and emergency response procedures
  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude with ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using SAP or similar CMMS platforms for work order management and documentation
  • Background in food manufacturing or other FDA-regulated environments with GMP/GFSI compliance
  • Boiler Operator certification or previous boiler operations experience
  • Previous experience directing contractors and managing third-party service providers

What Makes This Opportunity Unique:

Work for a rapidly expanding locally-owned company currently doubling production capacity with new facility construction, creating clear pathways into supervisory and engineering roles as the utilities team grows.

Join during a pivotal growth phase where you'll help establish best practices for the expanded utilities infrastructure rather than inheriting legacy problems.

Be part of a tight-knit maintenance and utilities team that values every team member's technical expertise and works collaboratively to solve complex facility challenges.

Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance (starts first of month after 60 days), dental coverage, 401(k) with company matching, and paid time off.

Stable day shift schedule (AM shift, may vary by project) in a climate-controlled environment with state-of-the-art industrial refrigeration and utilities systems.

Our Culture:

This growing bakery operation has built a reputation for treating their technical staff as valued partners in production success. The maintenance and utilities teams work directly with engineering leadership, and your technical recommendations will be heard and implemented. With the new facility expansion creating opportunities for utilities supervisors and specialized technical roles, this is the perfect time to join a company investing in both infrastructure and people.
