Job Title: Full Time Cytotechnologist
Location: White Plains, NY 10601
Shift: Day, Monday to Friday - 9am to 5pm | Per Diem, Varied - as needed
Job Summary: Receives body material, fluids, exudate and scrapings, etc. and assists physicians with FNA procedures and collects specimens from patients. Examines and records classification of slides and presents slides with unusual cytomorphology to Pathologist for further examination. Maintains record of all work performed in Cytology section, e.g. NYS Department of Health requirements and annual statistics. Supervises Cytotechnologists, assigns workload, develops schedule, prepares and maintains departmental records. Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Responsibilities:
- Understands and adheres to the Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors
- Must Maintain all records as per regulatory agencies requirements-CAP and NYSDOH. Must perform monthly and annual review of all required standards.
- Writes and revises and maintains SOP’s for policy and procedure manual
- Assists in Cytology Aspiration procedures that are scheduled from Ambulatory Surgery, Breast Imaging, Endoscopy, Off Site Radiology, and Radiology Department.
- Screens gynecological and non-gynecological cases on a daily basis and in a timely manner.
- Sign out cases with the Pathologist on (according to schedule)
- Assists with preparation, staining and coverslipping of cytology specimens as needed.
- Labels all Cytology stained slides, compares name, number of slides, clinical information, and gross description against the Cytology requisitions.
- Change and clean equipment and solutions in the Cytology Aspiration procedure tray, keep Cytology Aspiration procedure supplies in tray stocked as needed.
- Schedules per diem coverage and supervises same.
- Prepares and submits quality control/quality assurance reports.
- Meets regularly with Laboratory Director and Administrator.
- Maintains CME log for all members of section.
- Interviews cytology candidates for employment.
- Maintains and writes competency reviews for Cytotechnologists.
- Assists with cytotechnologists performance appraisals.
- Assists with disciplinary action as needed for Cytology.
- Orders supplies and maintains inventory.
- Participates in any other departmental activities as directed by the Laboratory Director or Pathology Supervisor.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education - Bachelor of Science with ASCP Registry and/or Certified Cytology School Degree Required.
Certificate/License - N.Y.S. license and prior supervisory experience required.
Experience/Skills:
- 3 years minimum experience screening gynecological, non-gynecological specimens and fine needle aspirations
- Familiar with Bethesda system for Cytology reporting.

Environment:
- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
