The Payroll Consultant leads comprehensive payroll assessments and optimization initiatives, focusing on compliance, efficiency, and scalability through people, process, and technology improvements.
Responsibilities
- Conduct stakeholder interviews to understand payroll operations and pain points
- Review end-to-end payroll processes including workflows, systems, reports, and controls
- Shadow payroll processing activities to identify inefficiencies and risks
- Evaluate payroll system configuration and compliance posture
- Develop process maps, risk assessments, and optimization recommendations
- Provide interim, hands-on payroll support when engaged, including full-cycle payroll processing
- Coordinate with third-party vendors such as payroll providers and tax agencies
- Support audits, tax filings, and year-end or quarter-end activities as scoped
- Document roles, responsibilities, and segregation of duties within payroll operations
- Maintain detailed project documentation and time tracking aligned with consulting standards
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in payroll, accounting, HR, or a related field
- Progressive experience in payroll operations, compliance, and process improvement
- Hands-on experience with payroll and HCM systems
- Strong knowledge of payroll regulations, tax reporting, and internal controls
- Ability to analyze complex processes and translate findings into actionable recommendations
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Detail-oriented with excellent documentation and organizational abilities
