The Opportunity

Mountain Mission School is seeking Christian teachers to join its ministry in Grundy, Virginia, serving students through both classroom instruction and residential care. This role is ideal for educators with a missionary heart who want to help students grow academically, spiritually, emotionally, and socially in a Christ-centered home, school, and church environment.

MMS is hiring for multiple teaching needs, with current priority areas including English, Math, and Science. While education degrees, ACSI certification, and state licensure are preferred, MMS also welcomes qualified candidates with a bachelor’s degree, strong subject-area knowledge, a teachable spirit, and a desire to serve.

This role also includes residential hall parent responsibilities, meaning teachers also help provide the structure, guidance, and daily care that make MMS a safe and loving home for students.

Located in the heart of Appalachia, MMS has served children and families since 1921. Students come from a wide range of backgrounds, including many who need a safe, stable, and loving place to live, learn, and grow. MMS receives no state or federal funding and continues its work through the support of individuals, churches, businesses, and partners who believe in its mission.

Primary Responsibilities

Classroom Teaching and Academic Formation

• Teach assigned classes in alignment with MMS curriculum, standards, mission, and educational goals.
• Create a classroom environment that supports students’ spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.
• Develop lesson plans and instructional materials that meet the needs of individual students and small groups.
• Use a variety of instructional strategies, including inquiry, group discussion, lecture, discovery, and technology as appropriate.
• Integrate a biblical worldview into instruction, helping students understand each subject through the lens of Scripture.
• Evaluate student academic and social growth, maintain appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
• Assess student achievement through formal and informal methods.
• Help students develop strong study habits, responsibility, and a sense of purpose in their learning.
• Participate in curriculum development, faculty task forces, professional development, and school activities as needed.
• Maintain professional competence and pursue growth as an educator.

Student Relationships and Discipleship

• Establish Christ-centered relationships with students marked by trust, care, consistency, and appropriate boundaries.
• Motivate students to develop knowledge, skills, habits, attitudes, and character that honor Christ.
• Identify student needs and help coach students toward healthy solutions.
• Encourage students in their academic, spiritual, emotional, and social development.
• Serve as a role model for students by demonstrating professionalism, responsibility, humility, and Christian character.
• Supervise students in classroom and out-of-classroom activities.

Residential Hall Parent Responsibilities

• Help create a home-like atmosphere on the residence hall rooted in Christian values, care, structure, and stability.
• Support the spiritual and emotional needs of children through prayer, devotions, biblical encouragement, and daily care.
• Attend to students’ physical needs, including personal care, hygiene, health routines, clothing needs, cleanliness, and healthy daily structure.
• Provide guidance, discipline, and correction in a consistent, age-appropriate, and grace-filled manner.
• Help children develop social skills, problem-solving skills, time management, responsibility, and healthy ways to express emotions.
• Monitor students’ educational progress and provide support for homework and school assignments.
• Encourage students’ involvement in social, recreational, and enrichment activities.
• Work respectfully with parents and legal guardians, supporting family communication and honoring confidentiality.
• Help students navigate grief, transition, adjustment, and the challenges that may accompany removal from home.
• Model patience, affection, steadiness, and Christlike love in daily interactions.

Faculty and Ministry Collaboration

• Work cooperatively with other teachers, hall parents, administrators, and support staff.
• Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, school personnel, and other stakeholders.
• Support MMS policies, procedures, standards, and campus rhythms.
• Participate in staff meetings, worship services, residential responsibilities, and ministry activities as assigned.
• Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Director of Education, MMS President, Director of Home Life, or other designated leaders.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a committed follower of Christ who has a heart for children and the ability to serve faithfully in both the classroom and residential life of the school.

• Must be a follower of Christ and aligned with the mission, values, and doctrinal commitments of Mountain Mission School.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Academic background or experience in English, Math, Science, or another relevant subject area preferred.
• Education degree, ACSI certification, or state teaching license preferred.
• Experience working with students required.
• Teaching experience preferred.
• First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
• Ability to integrate a biblical worldview into teaching and student formation.
• Strong communication, organization, planning, and mentoring skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, residential staff, students, families, and leadership.
• Basic technology and computer skills.
• High level of adaptability, accountability, stewardship, teamwork, and emotional maturity.
• Must have U.S. work authorization.

Compensation and Benefits

Mountain Mission School offers a unique compensation model shaped by the residential nature of the role. Starting salary is typically around $28,000, with significant additional benefits and compensation provided through on-campus living and employment.
