Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Industrial Process & Chemical Systems

Location: Norfolk, Massachusetts

Work Arrangement: Hybrid Flexibility

Type: Full-Time

If you enjoy designing real-world engineered systems instead of repetitive production parts, this opportunity offers something increasingly rare:

Complex custom engineering work, broad technical exposure, and the ability to own projects from concept through installation.

We are a specialized engineering and fabrication company that has spent more than 40 years designing and building custom industrial systems involving:

  • chemical processing
  • hazardous fume handling
  • acid recovery and recycling
  • industrial ventilation
  • fluid handling systems
  • process piping
  • filtration and environmental systems
  • specialized manufacturing infrastructure

Our projects support industries ranging from advanced manufacturing and aerospace to chemical processing, energy, electronics, and emerging technologies tied to AI infrastructure and rare-earth material recovery.

This is not a “sit in a cubicle and update drawings” role.

You’ll work directly with experienced engineers, customers, fabricators, vendors, and field teams to design systems that are actually built and installed in the real world.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll take ownership of complete engineered systems and support projects from concept development through fabrication and startup.

Your work may include:

  • 3D modeling and mechanical system design
  • Piping and fluid system layouts
  • Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
  • Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Equipment layouts and skidded systems
  • Pumps, valves, heat exchangers, tanks, and process equipment integration
  • BOM development and component specification
  • Vendor coordination and technical sourcing
  • Design reviews and problem solving
  • Supporting fabrication, installation, and commissioning activities

Projects are highly varied and often technically unique. One week may involve hazardous exhaust and fume scrubber systems, while the next could involve chemical recycling systems, industrial utility infrastructure, or specialized process equipment supporting emerging technologies.

What Makes This Role Different

Real Engineering Variety

This is a highly diversified project environment — not repetitive product maintenance work.

Engineers here routinely work on:

  • fluid process systems
  • industrial ventilation and exhaust systems
  • chemical handling equipment
  • custom mechanical assemblies
  • integrated process skids
  • environmental and recycling technologies
  • specialty manufacturing infrastructure

Strong Technical Ownership

You’ll have direct influence over designs, layouts, equipment selection, and project execution.

The team values engineers who:

  • think critically
  • solve problems creatively
  • improve systems proactively
  • collaborate well across disciplines
  • enjoy learning new technologies and industries

Small Team / High Impact Environment

This is a collaborative engineering group with exceptionally strong retention and long employee tenure.

You won’t disappear inside layers of corporate bureaucracy.

Engineers here are trusted with meaningful responsibility and broad exposure to projects, customers, and technical challenges.

What We’re Looking For

We are intentionally open to candidates from several engineering backgrounds, including:

  • Mechanical Design Engineering
  • Process Engineering
  • Systems Engineering
  • Test Equipment Engineering
  • Fluid Systems Engineering
  • Industrial Equipment Design

Strong candidates will typically have:

  • 5+ years of engineering or mechanical design experience
  • Strong 2D and 3D CAD capability (AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks)
  • Experience designing mechanical or fluid handling systems
  • Understanding of pumps, valves, piping, instrumentation, or process equipment
  • Ability to develop technical drawings and engineering documentation
  • Experience working cross-functionally with vendors, fabrication, manufacturing, or customers
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
