Application Engineer

Location: North Carolina (Charlotte)

Position Overview

Are you a technically strong machining professional who enjoys tackling complex manufacturing problems and working directly with customers? This Application Engineer role is designed for a hands-on expert who can bridge the gap between machining operations and advanced cutting tool solutions.

In this position, you will partner closely with customers and internal commercial and engineering teams to develop, implement, and refine machining applications that drive measurable improvements in productivity, efficiency, and tool performance.


What You’ll Do

Technical Application Development

  • Develop, test, and optimize machining applications across turning, milling, drilling, and threading
  • Create machining strategies that improve cycle time, tool life, surface finish, and part quality
  • Utilize CAM software and simulation tools to validate and refine tool paths
  • Provide field-based feedback to engineering teams regarding tool performance, coatings, and materials


Customer & Sales Support

  • Work alongside sales teams to provide pre-sales and post-sales technical support
  • Visit customer facilities to assess machining challenges and recommend optimized solutions
  • Lead and support on-site trials, process validation, and troubleshooting efforts
  • Deliver customer training on tooling applications, machining best practices, and new technologies


Custom & Engineered Tooling

  • Collaborate with design and engineering teams to develop or modify tools for specific customer needs
  • Prepare application documentation including cutting data, process recommendations, and reports
  • Evaluate feasibility and performance of engineered tooling concepts


Project & Performance Management

  • Manage multiple customer projects and engineering priorities simultaneously
  • Track performance indicators such as cycle time reduction, cost savings, and tool life improvements
  • Identify opportunities to improve internal workflows, documentation, and knowledge sharing


Data, Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

  • Collect and analyze performance data from customer trials and production environments
  • Document success stories, application results, and case studies
  • Support internal teams with technical insights and best practices


Industry Engagement & Continuous Improvement

  • Stay current on machining technologies, materials, coatings, and manufacturing trends
  • Participate in industry events, technical training, and trade shows
  • Monitor competitor approaches to support application and product positioning


Professional Representation

  • Act as a trusted technical representative with customers and internal stakeholders
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism, ethics, and technical credibility
  • Continuously expand knowledge of tooling technologies, applications, and manufacturing processes


What We’re Looking For

  • Technical education or formal training in machining, manufacturing, or mechanical disciplines or equivalent industry experience
  • Typically 3–5+ years of hands-on experience in machining, toolmaking, or manufacturing environments
  • Strong working knowledge of metal cutting processes (turning, milling, drilling)
  • Experience supporting technical solutions in customer-facing or B2B manufacturing roles preferred
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and analyze machining conditions
  • Strong communication skills with a customer-focused mindset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; CRM experience is a plus
  • Willingness to travel within the assigned territory
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
