Senior Power Systems Engineer
Apply for this job

Job Overview:

Our Client is a leader in compliance automation for the modern power grid, bringing together deep power systems expertise with software-driven workflows. They seek a Power Systems Engineer with strong PSCAD modeling and Model Quality Testing (MQT) experience to develop, validate, and tune EMT models and benchmark them against RMS platforms. This role operates at the intersection of grid modeling, dynamic performance, and automation—tackling complex challenges around inverter-based resources, generation, storage, and grid reliability.

You will evaluate and improve model quality, identify and resolve discrepancies between EMT and RMS representations, and help scale automated validation processes used by utilities, generators, and renewable developers. Collaboration with software and product teams is central to the environment, enabling you to translate engineering rigor into robust, repeatable tools. Depending on experience, this position is available from Senior Engineer to Principal/Technical Lead level.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop, review, test, and validate PSCAD EMT models for generation, renewables, and energy storage resources
  • Execute Model Quality Testing (MQT) to assess model integrity, performance, and compliance with established requirements
  • Design and run testing methodologies to uncover model errors, inconsistencies, and unexpected dynamic behavior
  • Analyze simulation outputs and troubleshoot gaps between expected and observed system performance
  • Improve and help automate MQT workflows to make model validation faster, more consistent, and scalable
  • Tune and benchmark PSCAD EMT models against RMS models in platforms such as PSS/E and PSLF
  • Compare EMT and RMS dynamic responses, identify behavioral differences, and calibrate parameters for appropriate correlation
  • Assess transient and dynamic performance under a range of disturbances and operating conditions
  • Collaborate with engineering and software teams to enhance automated model validation and benchmarking capabilities
  • Support or lead dynamic performance, interconnection, and NERC/ISO compliance studies
  • Apply modeling expertise to requirements related to PRC, MOD, and other NERC reliability standards
  • Support studies and modeling requirements across ERCOT, ISO-NE, WECC, SPP, MISO, PJM, and other jurisdictions
  • Translate utility, ISO/RTO, and regulatory requirements into repeatable engineering and software workflows
  • Work with software engineers and product/operations teams to convert complex power systems requirements into automated tools and platform features
  • Define engineering methodologies, testing standards, and best practices for model validation
  • Contribute to tools that automate traditionally manual power systems engineering processes
  • For Senior/Principal levels, mentor junior engineers, lead technical projects, and support client engagements

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Strong hands-on experience with PSCAD and EMT modeling
  • Proven experience with Model Quality Testing (MQT) or comparable model validation/testing processes
  • Experience tuning, validating, and benchmarking PSCAD models against RMS models
  • Proficiency with at least one RMS platform such as PSS/E, PSLF, or TSAT
  • Solid understanding of power system dynamics, stability, and generation/storage modeling
  • Experience with ERCOT, ISO New England, or WECC requirements and processes preferred
  • Familiarity with NERC standards (particularly PRC and MOD) preferred
  • Experience with interconnection studies and ISO/RTO modeling requirements preferred
  • Experience modeling inverter-based resources (IBRs), BESS, solar, wind, or other renewable generation preferred
  • Experience with automated testing, model validation, or engineering workflow automation preferred
  • Experience collaborating with software development or engineering technology teams preferred
  • Seniority level (Senior Engineer to Principal/Technical Lead) will align with demonstrated experience and leadership capabilities.
