Senior Insurance Accountant
Want to work for a company with unparalleled financial strength and a small-company atmosphere? As a Berkshire Hathaway P&C leader with an A.M. Best A++ rating, National Indemnity Company needs a Senior Insurance Accountant who will own statutory accuracy, close discipline, and audit-ready reporting so underwriting and leadership can price risk with confidence. Your work protects the integrity of commercial auto, garage, and liability results that have defined NICO since 1940.
Performance Objectives
- Deliver a complete, reconcilable monthly close for assigned books within five business days, with premium, loss, and expense variances explained to finance leadership.
- Produce NAIC and state statutory schedules, footnotes, and exhibits that pass internal and external review with zero material adjustments.
- Reconcile cash, intercompany, and reinsurance balances weekly; resolve exceptions before they affect loss-fund or settlement cycles.
- Support year-end and interim audits by assembling workpapers, IBNR and reserve support, and control evidence that auditors accept on first review.
- Strengthen SAP/Excel/Access processes so recurring journal, allocation, and reporting work is documented, repeatable, and less error-prone each quarter.
- Partner with the Insurance Data Unit and operations to validate program results and flag issues that would distort profitability or regulatory filings.
Environment & Resources
You will sit in Omaha (hybrid after training; not visa-sponsored) on the insurance finance team, reporting to accounting leadership and working daily with IDU, underwriting support, IT, and Berkshire affiliates. You will use core GL, statutory reporting tools, Excel, and Access, with a culture that invests in learning, wellness, and process improvement rather than heroics.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in accounting, finance, or related field and 5+ years of P&C or insurance accounting (statutory GAAP/SAP strongly preferred).
- Proven ownership of close, reconciliations, and statutory or regulatory filings with clean audit outcomes.
- Advanced Excel (and comfort with databases) to build, audit, and hand off financial workpapers.
- Clear written communication for management, regulators, and auditors; discretion with sensitive financial data.
- Ability to prioritize peak-period work independently while staying aligned with team controls and deadlines.
Role Selling Points
- A++ financial strength and Berkshire backing without big-company bureaucracy—coworkers become family.
- Immediate 401(k) enrollment with 100% match up to 5%, full medical/dental/vision, 100% upfront tuition reimbursement, parental leave, and on-site Omaha gym.
- Employee Resource Groups, surveys that actually drive change, and a wellness culture built into how we work.
