Our client, a Licensed Producer (LP) dedicated to supporting the Canadian veteran community, is seeking a Controller to join the leadership team alongside the CEO and VP Finance.


The Controller will be responsible for leading financial operations and reporting in a high-growth start-up, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and integrity across all accounting functions. This role will design and implement scalable financial systems, drive process improvements, and provide insights that inform strategic decision-making. 


The ideal candidate will combine technical accounting expertise with the demonstrated ability to build financial infrastructure for a high-growth, start-up organization.


MUST be able to be on-site at the Barrie facility 3x/week for a hybrid work arrangement.


PREFERENCE FOR THOSE WITH CPA designation (CA, CMA, CGA); candidates in progress will be considered.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Implement scalable accounting systems, policies, and internal controls to support growth.
  • Partner with leadership to deliver financial insights that inform strategy and resource allocation.
  • Drive process improvements, automation, and efficiency across the finance function.


General Ledger & Accounting Oversight

  • Manage all general ledger transactions, reconciliations, and month/year-end close processes.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee revenue recognition, expense management, and fixed asset accounting.


Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare timely, accurate financial statements for leadership and external auditors.
  • Deliver variance analysis, performance metrics, and cash flow reporting.
  • Support VP Finance on quarterly business review.


Budgeting, Forecasting & Modeling

  • Support with annual budgeting and forecasting processes alongside VP Finance and CEO.
  • Monitor performance against budget, identify risks and opportunities, and provide recommendations.
  • Build and maintain financial models to support planning and growth.


Compliance, Audit & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with tax, audit, and financial reporting obligations.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and audit readiness.
  • Manage relationships with auditors, banks, and regulatory bodies.


Process Improvement & Scaling

  • Optimize financial workflows, reporting structures, and systems.
  • Develop policies and best practices to guide sustainable scaling.


QUALIFICATIONS


Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA designation (CA, CMA, CGA) preferred; candidates in progress will be considered.


Experience

  • 3-5+ years of progressive experience in accounting or financial management.
  • Strong background in financial reporting, compliance, and general ledger management.
  • Experience in a start-up, high-growth, or regulated industry is an asset.


Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar).
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Knowledge of Canadian accounting principles and reporting standards (ASPE; IFRS a plus).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Self-starter with problem-solving abilities and a collaborative mindset.
