Title: Controls Engineer

Location: Phoenix, AZ

We are seeking a skilled and motivated engineer to lead technical electro-mechanical integration projects, utilizing a variety of engineering and manufacturing disciplines. This role requires proactive technical and commercial interactions with internal teams such as Business Development, Design Engineering, and Operations, as well as with external clients and vendors. The ideal candidate will design equipment and factory automation for diverse market sectors, including semiconductor, medical, automotive, and aerospace industries, from concept through to production. The position is based primarily at our CTS office, with regular visits to local customers, engineering clients, and vendors. We are looking for a self-motivated professional who excels in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with tight deadlines, without compromising the accuracy of their work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop concepts, present ideas, design, calculate, budget, and schedule solutions for electrical and software automation.
  • Create ladder logic programs and user interface programs based on operational sequences developed by the client or the engineering team.
  • Familiarity with electrical codes and specifications for designing, drafting, and manufacturing power distribution and control cabinets is essential.
  • Willingness to learn codes and compliances across various industries, including semiconductor, food, medical, and aerospace.
  • Prepare AutoCAD schematics and cable assemblies based on design specifications and create bills of materials.
  • Lead design review presentations with internal and external customers for design discussion and approval.
  • Collaborate with the supply chain and account managers for optimal component selection, cost, and lead time.
  • Support the Manufacturing team to ensure strict adherence to design, customer specifications, and Industry Standards during system builds.
  • Provide onsite engineering support for installation, operation, retrofit, and repair of designed and manufactured systems.
  • Design for cost goals, manufacturability, and testability.
  • Occasionally work outside business hours to meet project timelines.
  • Assist the Business Development team in attracting new customers and opportunities.
  • Review new quote packages and resolve design and operational issues.
  • Act as an Operations liaison during design reviews.
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues throughout the build process, including interpreting CAD models and schematics.
  • Troubleshoot system operations based on customer requirements.
  • Recommend improvements in quality or production standards for optimal performance.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret technical drawings and wiring diagrams to understand the scope of work.
  • Inspect and functionally test work for quality, aesthetics, workmanship, and conformance to drawings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical or controls engineering.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical toolset for designing cable assemblies and schematics.
  • Proficiency with Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLCs/HMIs is required; Visual Studio experience is a plus.
  • Experience with various communication protocols and network setups for industrial equipment, including Ethernet, USB, Serial, and Devicenet.
  • Experience with PID loops for temperature, flow, pressure, and motion control.
  • General understanding of UL, NEC, and NFPA79 standards.
  • Ability to design power distribution up to 480VAC and low voltage control panels.
  • Basic understanding and experience with PCB design is a plus.
  • Initiative and ownership, with the ability to work independently and ask questions when necessary.

Education

  • BS in Electrical or Computer Science Engineering or equivalent experience in related markets.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical or controls engineering.
