Job Description


THE FIRM's Actuarial Practice is expanding in Asia. Our Actuarial Practice in Hong Kong started October 2022 and has been growing quickly with 12 onboard now.


We are looking for a (Senior) Manager /Principal candidate to join our Asia Pacific team based in Tokyo.


This exciting role will

  1. work with our US Team specialized in cross-border reinsurance for our Japanese and US clients with interest in the Japan market,
  2. collaborate closely with our existing Group Consulting firms teams in Japan, and
  3. be part of our APR Actuarial Team closely working with the team in Hong Kong on Asia-Pacific engagements.


  • Our Actuarial teams cover a broad range of topics from Insurance M&A, reinsurance, actuarial transformation, financial modelling, product advisory, regulatory advice, actuarial reporting, and capital, risk and value management.


  • The Candidate will play a key role in the delivery of projects for THE FIRM’s clients, which include top tier insurance companies, reinsurance companies, investment banks, law firms, regulators, and private equity firms.



Potential projects and responsibilities may include:

  • Work in partnership with Group's management consultancy colleagues in Asia-Pacific (Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore) and North America to identify and develop new sources of business in Japan and elsewhere
  • Lead or participate in client sales meetings
  • Proposal development
  • Thought leadership, including oversight and/or creation of intellectual capital
  • Client and industry presentations, surveys, case studies
  • Transition to more independent business development over 2-3 years (for M, SM level, initially BD work is not expected)
  • Work in partnership withGroup's management consultancy colleagues in Asia-Pacific and North America to execute client engagements in Japan and elsewhere
  • Oversight of client engagements – work planning, communications, process and client management
  • Creation and analysis of financial projections
  • Mergers & acquisitions and reinsurance transactions
  • Life and annuity product development
  • Financial reporting
  • Operating with a high degree of personal responsibility and accountability for the maintenance of a portfolio of clients
  • Working as a senior member of a collaborative team and acting as a role model for less experienced colleagues
  • Recruiting additional staff in Tokyo based on the emerging needs of the business (e.g., junior technical staff, senior business development staff, etc.)


Skills and Attributes

  • FSA/FIA/FIAJ or equivalent actuarial credentials with 8+ years of professional experience in the Japanese insurance market
  • Robust life insurance, regulatory, and product knowledge
  • Prior consulting experience is preferred but not necessary
  • Local Japan industry recognition in areas such as product development, assumption setting, valuation, financial reporting, and/or risk management
  • Track record of leading and managing teams, and delivering against deadlines
  • Knowledgeable in Japan insurance regulations, such as SMR and ESR
  • Knowledgeable in local financial accounting such as J-GAAP, IFRS-17
  • Knowledge of financial modeling systems, such as FIS Prophet, RNA or Axis.
  • Ability to manage staff
  • Strong written and oral Japanese and English language skills
  • Strong skills with the Microsoft Office suite
