Structurer Japan In-Force Solutions


** proposes, structures and administers bespoke capital management reinsurance solutions for ** Re’s life insurance clients with a focus on clients’ product portfolios in the savings, retirement and investment space.


These transactions typically involve combinations of financial markets and insurance risks while delivering a capital and/or risk management impact relevant to an insurers corporate finance management and planning.

Our In-Force Solutions business is responsible for the design, advocacy and delivery management of such transactions in the context of existing portfolios of client business, whether open or in run-off.


** is seeking to engage a market-facing structurer to enhance our ability to deliver this business in Japan.


Our market-facing structurer will have the following responsibilities:


Proactive opportunity identification


• Continual review of client and industry circumstances in Japan in collaboration with the Origination team, with the aim of identifying commercial pain points for clients for which ** capabilities could potentially deliver relief of value to the client


• Continual interaction with the Origination team for the purposes of exchanging views on identified pain points to assess probable client receptivity to relief generating transactions


• Continual interaction with the Origination team for the purpose of identifying priority clients and relief themes in the context of commercial potential and relevance of these clients and themes


Proposal development

• Development of transaction concepts taking into account the following non-exhaustive factors:

 Specification of cashflows and balances to be exchanged under a given transaction concept

 Economic deliverability of a given concept within the boundaries of ** risk management and risk tolerance

 Profitability of a given concept for **

 Financial reporting characteristics of a given concept for ** under IFRS, Solvency II and other relevant frameworks

 Economic impact of a given concept on the client and the likely client reaction to such impact

 Financial reporting characteristics of a given concept for the client under IFRS, local GAAP and local prudential supervision frameworks

 Impact of a given concept on the client’s key quantitative metrics

 Legal and regulatory format classification of a given concept (e.g. insurance, reinsurance, derivative, fund, security)


• Development of suitable approach documents for the presentation of a given transaction concept (e.g. termsheets, presentations, illustrative models, introductory correspondence, technical notes)

• Collaborative interaction with multi-disciplinary colleagues in the development of

transaction concepts, including relevant content experts and the Origination team


Proposal delivery

• Presentation of solutions to clients at all relevant management levels with ability to proficiently communicate technical and strategic features of the proposed transaction

(such as economic & reporting impacts, pricing bases, hedging methods, etc.)


• Dynamic ongoing interaction with relevant stakeholders during client evaluation processes, including explanatory follow up communication, investigation of previously

unidentified transaction issues/blockers unearthed during exchanges, preparation of supplementary materials to support client evaluation


• Evaluation of client corporate and personnel motivation circumstances to support ** assessment of transaction engagement and execution probabilities


Real-time reactive opportunity capture


• Rapid real-time interpretation of incoming client perspectives and information, in order to identify previously opaque commercial opportunities revealed by such perspectives and information


• Rapid synthesis of possible relief transaction proposals in reaction to revealed commercial opportunities in the context of comprehensive understanding of ** capabilities


Transaction management


• Management of multidisciplinary transaction teams to ensure the efficient delivery of relief solutions following positive engagement decisions from clients


• Management of external delivery of transaction including perceived quality of ** Re client interactions and deliverables (e.g. documentation)


• Negotiations of transaction terms with our clients


• Leading internal approval processes for client transactions and new product initiatives


Commercial responsibility


• Accountability for the fulfillment of revenue generation targets for capital management solutions within assigned jurisdictions


Strategy development


• Continual collaboration with the Origination team in order to set the commercial strategy for the delivery of capital management solutions within assigned jurisdictions, including but not limited to:


 Selection and prioritisation of target clients

 Selection and prioritisation of robust themes and transactions for proposals

 Identification of nascent themes for investigation and new concept investment


Continuous development

• Continual maintenance of relevant expertise and awareness of client disclosures, industry trends, including but not limited to:


 Accounting and regulatory framework changes

 Product design trends

 Risk management trends

 Client financial disclosures and strategy disclosures


Expected Profile

• Degree in mathematics, actuarial science, insurance / financial mathematics, statistics or business graduates with mathematical orientation, or other quantitatively oriented disciplines

• 7+ years of relevant professional experience in the area of life reinsurance, life insurance, wholesale banking or related activities

• Experience in dealing with client customers at the senior executive level (up to CFO level)

• Proficient knowledge of life insurance savings and investment products, capital management, regulation, accounting and taxation

• Exceptional presentation skills, particularly in the communication of complex ideas

• Financial Mathematics and/or Actuarial training

• Ability to manage multiple complex projects and project team members simultaneously

• Strong analytical and conceptual skills

• Fluent business Japanese speaker (native level)

• Fluent English speaker

• Intrinsic motivation, commercial instinct, joy in deal making

• Agile development mindset and focus on deal delivery by target date.
