About the role
*** is a technology-enabled provider of insurance asset and liability management, working with life insurers and reinsurers on balance sheet optimisation across multiple regulatory jurisdictions.
The Japan office opened in 2026 and is growing, following a mandate to deliver the financial, actuarial and risk functions of a newly established offshore life reinsurance platform.
This is an addition to a small Tokyo team. The office is being pulled in three directions at once - deepening existing client relationships, pricing new deals, and building the local technical hub - and this role exists to carry the technical load so the senior team can spend more time with clients.
The work is deliberately broad. This is not a vacated seat with a fixed scope. Analytical work will be handed to you as it arrives, and you will be expected to wear several hats as the business grows.
Responsibilities
- Run ad hoc actuarial analysis on request, independently - this is the core of the role
- Provide technical support on client work: analysis, calculation, checking, and turning results into something the team can use
- Support transaction pricing and new deal work as the Japan technical hub develops
- Take on day-to-day support on existing client accounts, including data handling and hand-off to overseas offices
- Over time, and depending on your interest, grow into deal-side actuarial work, modelling support, or experience studies
Requirements
- Qualified actuary - Japanese fellowship (FIAJ) preferred. Associate members with the right aptitude will be considered
- Able to run ad hoc analysis independently and think on your feet. A broad base to draw on matters more than depth in any single specialism
- Strong, hands-on Excel and VBA
- English: reading and writing email is essential. Spoken fluency is not required
- Native-level Japanese
- Comfortable in a small team. The role is back-end and does not require client-facing sales ability, but you must work easily alongside a handful of colleagues
- Willing to work without a fixed job description in a fast-growing office
Preferred
- Some understanding of the asset side - strategic asset allocation, general account investment, ALM. This can be taught
- Python, or a low-level language such as C or C#. The internal modelling software is proprietary and heavily code-based. A different skill set and not a core requirement, but a significant plus
- Exposure to asset-intensive reinsurance, separate accounts, or transaction work
Notes on fit
- Neither a pure valuation nor a pure pricing profile is required. Pricing-side thinking - quick, big picture - fits marginally better than a regulation-driven valuation profile, but the ability to move between both is what matters
- The team places real weight on people who integrate well. A strongly individualistic or self-promoting style is not a fit
