The Opportunity: Director of Operations

Location: West Virginia, within commuting distance of the D.C. metro

Company Overview

Our client is a rapidly growing, privately held residential services organization operating across multiple markets in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. The company has built significant momentum over the past several years and is now investing in its leadership infrastructure to support its next phase of growth. As the organization scales, it is seeking a senior operational leader who can bring structure, accountability, and disciplined execution to a distributed field organization. The company values high-agency leaders who take ownership, move with urgency, develop their people, and approach operational challenges with a systematic, data-driven mindset.

Position Overview

The Director of Operations will assume ownership of day-to-day operations across a multi-location service footprint. Reporting directly to the CEO, this individual will oversee production, field operations, procurement, supply chain, fleet, safety, compliance, and operational financial performance. This is a highly visible leadership role designed to allow the CEO to transition away from daily operational management and focus more heavily on growth and strategic priorities. The successful candidate will inherit an existing operations team but will be expected to build the systems, processes, measurement tools, and leadership cadence necessary to support continued expansion. This role is ideal for an experienced operator who is equally comfortable developing people, analyzing business performance, and getting into the details of field execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own operational performance across multiple locations and markets, including responsibility for operational P&L and margin performance.
  • Lead production, field operations, procurement, supply chain, fleet, safety, and compliance functions.
  • Build scalable operating systems, processes, KPIs, and management routines to support continued company growth.
  • Establish clear performance baselines and improve operational metrics including cycle time, procurement accuracy, job costing, backlog, throughput, safety, and working-capital efficiency.
  • Analyze operational problems at the root-cause level and develop measurable solutions rather than relying on instinct or short-term fixes.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop frontline and mid-level managers while creating clear accountability for performance.
  • Build a culture of ownership in which leaders proactively identify and solve problems before they become larger operational issues.
  • Partner closely with the CEO and other functional leaders to translate company priorities into consistent field execution.
  • Improve operational margin through stronger processes, labor and resource utilization, procurement discipline, and execution.
  • Establish effective communication and escalation structures across a geographically distributed workforce.
  • Develop the organization and leadership infrastructure required to support the company's next stage of growth.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of progressive operational leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading a multi-location or geographically distributed field-service operation.
  • Experience managing operational financial performance, including P&L, margin, budgeting, and key business metrics.
  • Proven ability to help an organization scale through a meaningful period of growth.
  • Experience within residential construction, roofing, HVAC, restoration, exterior services, or another comparable field-service environment strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of field operations, production management, scheduling, procurement, and workforce execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify operational constraints, diagnose root causes, and implement repeatable solutions.
  • Experience developing junior and mid-level managers into stronger operational leaders.
  • Strong analytical and financial acumen with an ability to translate data into operational action.
  • High emotional intelligence and the ability to communicate the purpose behind organizational and operational change.
  • High-agency, ownership-oriented leadership style with a strong bias toward action.
  • Comfortable operating in an entrepreneurial environment where processes and infrastructure are still being built.

Leadership Profile

The ideal candidate is a disciplined, hands-on operator who combines strong analytical thinking with exceptional people leadership. This individual should naturally think in systems and processes, ask detailed questions, and seek to understand why problems occur before implementing solutions. Just as importantly, the Director of Operations must be able to develop people rather than simply direct them. The organization is looking for a leader who takes responsibility for the performance of their team, sets a high standard, communicates clearly, and builds the capabilities of the leaders around them.

Work Environment & Travel

This is a hands-on leadership position supporting operations across multiple markets. The Director of Operations will maintain a significant presence at the company's primary operating location while regularly traveling throughout the broader regional footprint to engage with field teams, evaluate performance, and support operational execution.

Relocation assistance is available for the right candidate. Some flexibility may be considered for candidates with demonstrated experience successfully leading distributed operations at scale.
