The Opportunity

OPB is seeking a Senior Director, Membership to succeed their long-serving leader who is retiring after a transformational tenure. The incoming Senior Director will guide a top-tier team and continue building a robust Sustainer-based membership program that currently boasts over 164,000 supporter households and contributes nearly $28 million annually to OPB’s public service journalism mission.

This is an ideal opportunity for a visionary fundraising strategist and dynamic team leader with strong marketing instincts and a data-driven mindset. The Senior Director will be instrumental in shaping member engagement across all audience channels, elevating donor relationships, and driving long-term growth and innovation.

This position collaborates closely with Philanthropy and Sponsorship to advance OPB’s mission, including their award-winning journalism and KMHD Jazz Without Boundaries. OPB is a national leader in public media, and this role sits at the heart of that impact.


Position Summary

The Senior Director, Membership will lead the development, execution, and performance of a comprehensive, multi-channel Membership program. They will directly oversee teams focused on membership giving, digital fundraising, and member/audience services — supporting more than half of the organization’s operating budget through member contributions.

Working collaboratively across departments, the Senior Director serves as a champion for data-informed fundraising practices and audience conversion strategies.


The Membership portfolio includes:

  • Monthly Sustainer giving
  • Digital engagement and fundraising
  • Canvassing, direct mail, telemarketing
  • Vehicle donations
  • On-air fundraising
  • Workplace giving
  • Customer service for OPB and KMHD audiences


The Senior Director supervises a team of eleven staff members and works in close partnership with Development Operations and cross-functional teams to drive member-centered revenue strategies.


Key Areas of Responsibility


Fundraising Strategy & Leadership (35%)

  • Develop and drive a high-impact, multichannel fundraising program
  • Lead innovation and testing for acquisition, retention, and growth
  • Integrate campaign messaging, audience targeting, and digital engagement
  • Align closely with Philanthropy, Campaign, and Sponsorship teams

Collaborative Leadership (20%)

  • Contribute to internal audience revenue strategies
  • Partner with the Development Leadership Team

People Leadership & Team Development (20%)

  • Lead, coach, and grow a high-performing team
  • Assess and evolve roles, and create growth opportunities
  • Build internal culture around fundraising and collaboration

Program Metrics & Data Analysis (15%)

  • Define KPIs, forecast revenue, and lead budget planning
  • Lead multi-channel campaign analysis and strategic decision-making
  • Benchmark with peer organizations to improve performance

Compliance (5%)

  • Ensure fundraising compliance, reporting, and vendor oversight
  • Work with legal and finance teams on contracts and data governance

Other Duties (5%)

  • Participate in staff committees and organization-wide initiatives

Supervision

The Senior Director, Membership directly supervises:

  • Director, Membership Fundraising and Retention
  • Director, Digital Membership
  • Member Experience Manager


Working Conditions

This is an on-site role with hybrid flexibility, based at OPB headquarters in Portland, Oregon. Some evenings, weekends, and regional/national travel are expected.


Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience leading complex, multi-channel fundraising programs
  • Proven success in donor acquisition, retention, and revenue growth
  • 5+ years of people management experience
  • Strong background in data-driven decision making, budgeting, and campaign ROI
  • Exceptional cross-functional collaboration and team-building skills
  • Strong communication, strategic thinking, and leadership presence
  • Familiarity with CRM platforms, Microsoft Office, and project management tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in media-based fundraising
  • Salesforce CRM experience
  • Knowledge of AI integration in fundraising
  • ROI-focused event fundraising experience

  • Salary Range: $120,000 - $140,000 annually, depending on experience
