POSITION: Director of Communications  

SALARY: $120,000- $170,000 Annual Salary (Commensurate with Experience)

LOCATION: Remote

A black-led national non-profit organization is on a mission to redefine justice in America, acknowledging its complex history. By challenging racial hierarchies and social controls imposed on communities of color through the justice sector and other public systems, this organization is pioneering a shift towards a community-centered justice system. It focuses on "Structural Well-Being," a concept that envisions a reformed system comprising public policies, inclusive institutional practices, cultural representations, and norms aimed at enhancing the well-being of families, communities, and individuals for positive life outcomes. This approach stands in direct opposition to the prevailing framework of structural racism.


Job Summary:


The Communications Director will be instrumental in shaping and promoting the organization's public presence, product development, and dissemination of knowledge across various communication platforms. The role involves developing and overseeing the organization's strategic communication plan, ensuring it aligns with its core objectives. This includes leading a team to effectively implement the plan, managing goals, and expectations based on team size and individual workloads.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Communications Strategy, Vision, and Leadership:
  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive communications plan that supports the organization's strategic goals, ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms.
  • Craft and maintain the organization's branding and narrative strategy to ensure impactful messaging.
  • Build strong relationships with key media, influencers, and partners to broaden the organization's message and impact.
  • Serve as the main spokesperson and enhance the organization's visibility and role in public discourse.
  • Boost the organization's online presence through social media, websites, and other digital platforms.
  • Regularly update the website with new information and track engagement over time.
  • Create and execute communication activities that promote organizational priorities.
  • Analyze and adapt communication strategies to achieve desired outcomes and provide strategic guidance to leadership.
  • Team Development/Management:
  • Inspire and manage a communications team to produce high-quality work across various communication facets.
  • Foster a team environment that encourages innovation, improvement, and a focus on well-being.
  • Manage the communications budget, aligning with the organization's financial goals and promoting a high-performance culture.


Qualifications:

  • Experience in leadership and strategic vision in communications, particularly in enhancing an organization's profile and impact.
  • Adaptability, resilience, and a focus on personal well-being in professional settings.
  • Deep understanding of racial justice, equity, inclusion, and the systemic issues at play.
  • Strong collaborative skills, excellent in writing/editing, verbal communication, and strategy implementation.
  • Ability to manage high workloads, prioritize effectively, and proactively communicate needs.
  • Proven track record in managing diverse initiatives and building relationships through influence.
  • Commitment to collaborative work with various groups, including staff, board members, and volunteers.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with enthusiasm for launching new initiatives.
  • Technical proficiency in WordPress, HTML, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Suite, Canva, Salesforce, Zoom, and Mac environments.
  • Comfortable in a fully remote work setting.
