Title: Bus/Van Driver (Part-Time)

Pay: $16.00 per hour DOQ

Schedule: Flexible hours determined by needs of the program

GENERAL PURPOSE

Plymouth Township’s Bus/Van Driver performs a variety of routine and complex transportation tasks. Main duties and responsibilities relate directly to driving a bus/van and coordinating transportation plans with the dispatcher in support of overall senior bus/van service programs. The Bus/Van Driver performs a variety of routine clerical, administrative and technical duties, including, but not limited to, receiving and dispatching routine information; keeping records; and assisting in the administration of the standard operating policies and procedures of the senior bus/van dispatch center.

Works under the general supervision of the Senior Transportation Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drives vehicles for senior bus/van program.
  • Coordinates pick-ups for seniors participating in recreational or social service programs, such as community center programs, Friendship Station programs, shopping trips, library or museum visits, sightseeing trips, or sporting events.
  • Assists Township and other specialists to meet the transportation needs of their programs and services.
  • Maintains an accurate accounting of fees / tokens and program participants on trips.
  • Cleans and washes transportation vehicles.
  • Provides transportation information and referral services for other transportation services available in the community.
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phones, typing correspondence, running errands, receiving the public, providing customer assistance, data processing, bookkeeping, picking up supplies needed for activities, making arrangements for use of equipment, etc.
  • Monitors telephones in the senior bus/van dispatch center and answers all incoming calls to gather all necessary information to transmit or relay.
  • Maintains log on telephone communications, bus/van service activity, schedules, and appointments.
  • Maintains dispatch center work area and equipment in dean and working condition.
  • Operates cell phones and change in communication with bus/van drivers.
  • Operates listed office machines as required.
  • Inputs data to standard office and department forms, both manual and automated.
  • Schedules daily bus/van transportation and trips.
  • Assists in the development of notices, flyers, brochures, newsletters, media releases, news articles and other informational materials about programs and services.
  • Prepares and monitors work orders.
  • Performs daily cash balancing and sales of tokens.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned.
  • Service hours are generally Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Additionally, some early morning, weekend and evening service hours may be needed on occasion.


DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

(A)  Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

(B) Any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the functions of the job.


Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

(A) Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving; Ability to safely drive a bus/van or van.

(B) Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.

(C) Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with senior adults, employees, supervisors, program participants, and the general public; Knowledge of senior citizen services and needs.

(D) Working knowledge of computers and modern office practices and procedures.

(E) Skill and ability to operate the listed tools and equipment.

(F) Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid state of Michigan driver's license with chauffeur license with an admissible driving record. The employee must be able to pass a physical and drug screen. In addition, the employee will be subject to pre-employment and on-going drug and alcohol screening in accordance with the Township Policy.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid or ability to obtain certification.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

  • Transportation bus/van (12 to14 passenger plus driver). Hand tools used in the maintenance of transportation bus/van; phone; mobile or portable radio. Phone; personal computer including accounting, publishing, spreadsheet and word processing software; copy machine; postage machine; fax machine; calculator; paper folder.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
