Heavy Equipment Technician - Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic

Location: Edmonton, AB

Pay: $38–$50/hour (based on experience)

Schedule: Shop-based in winter | Field travel during the operating season

The Opportunity

Looking to get out of the same old shop routine? This is a chance to put your mechanical skills to work in an industry that takes you places most people never get to see.

We're looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic to join the Edmonton team, maintaining and repairing the equipment that keeps Canada's rail infrastructure moving. This isn't your typical oilfield or mining gig. You'll be working on a varied lineup of heavy equipment, rail maintenance machinery, trucks, trailers and support equipment, with a mix of shop work and hands-on field service across Alberta, Saskatchewan and occasionally Manitoba.

During the busy season, you'll head out with field crews to keep equipment running on rail projects. Some trips can mean being away for up to two weeks at a time, followed by a few days back home. There are also occasional emergency callouts when equipment needs attention on site.

When the field season winds down, you'll be back in the Edmonton shop handling maintenance, inspections, repairs and getting equipment ready for the next season.

If you enjoy turning wrenches, troubleshooting equipment and don't mind a little travel, this is worth a look.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair a variety of heavy equipment, rail maintenance machinery, trucks, trailers and support equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections and scheduled repairs to keep equipment safe and ready to work.
  • Travel with field crews to service equipment and handle breakdowns on active rail projects.
  • Monitor equipment condition, identify mechanical issues and flag anything that needs to be taken out of service.
  • Work alongside operators, providing mechanical guidance on equipment operation, inspections and maintenance.
  • Keep maintenance records, service reports and equipment logs up to date.

What We're Looking For

  • Heavy Duty Mechanic experience working on off-road equipment, heavy machinery, trucks or similar equipment.
  • Journeyperson certification is an asset, but not a requirement. Experienced apprentices with a solid mechanical background are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with heavy equipment, forestry equipment, construction equipment or industrial machinery would be a good fit.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. You know your way around a wrench and can figure out what's causing the problem.
  • Comfortable working independently and alongside field crews.
  • Willing and able to travel throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan and occasionally Manitoba, including extended trips away from home.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence.
  • Own tools required.

What's In It For You

  • $38–$50/hour, depending on experience, with flexibility for the right mechanic.
  • Additional $2/hour field premium when working out in the field.
  • Travel accommodations and meal allowance covered while on the road.
  • RRSP contribution of $2.15 for every hour worked, fully paid by the company. No employee contribution required.
  • Extended health, dental and vision coverage, with the company covering 50% of the premiums.
  • Life and disability insurance.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Non-union environment.

Schedule & Work Environment

Field Season: Travel assignments are generally busier through the summer. Expect approximately 10-hour days, 6 days on and 1 day off, primarily day shifts with some nights depending on the project. Some assignments can keep you on the road for up to two weeks at a time.

Winter Season: Primarily shop-based work in Edmonton, generally 40 hours per week. Day shifts starting around 7:30–8:00 AM, focused on servicing, repairing and preparing equipment for the upcoming season.

Interested?

If you're a Heavy Duty Mechanic who enjoys working on equipment, figuring out mechanical problems and getting out into the field, we'd like to hear from you.

Journeyperson or apprentice, if you've got the hands-on experience and the right mechanical background, let's talk.
