Field Service Technician / Mechanic

Kansas City, MO Metro Area

Full-Time | Field-Based | Day Shift | Some Overnight Travel

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Field Service Technician / Mechanic to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain heavy-duty trucks and specialized truck-mounted utility equipment throughout the Kansas City, MO metro area.

This is a hands-on field service position working primarily at customer locations, with some work performed at the service center as needed. You’ll work on bucket trucks, aerial equipment, digger derricks, cranes, high-rail equipment, service trucks, and other chassis- and track-mounted equipment.

The role involves working across diesel engines, truck chassis, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, drivetrains, suspension, CAN bus systems, and equipment controls.

Our team regularly services equipment from manufacturers such as Terex, Versalift, Elliott, Freightliner, and Stellar. If you’re an experienced mechanic who enjoys troubleshooting, working independently, and interacting directly with customers, this is an excellent opportunity.

What You’ll Do

  • Travel to customer locations throughout the Kansas City metro area to diagnose, service, and repair equipment
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain chassis- and track-mounted aerials, bucket trucks, digger derricks, cranes, high-rail equipment, service trucks, and other specialized utility equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs in accordance with dealer and manufacturer standards
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, drivetrains, chassis components, and suspension systems
  • Diagnose and repair LMI (Load Moment Indicator) and CAN bus (Controller Area Network) systems
  • Use a laptop and diagnostic software to troubleshoot equipment and access technical information
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, hydraulic diagrams, equipment manuals, and repair orders
  • Inspect and service vehicles and equipment both in the field and at the service center
  • Verify completed repairs and road test vehicles when required
  • Maintain accurate inspection reports, repair orders, service records, parts usage, labor time, and timecards
  • Properly identify and tag warranty and core parts for return
  • Communicate additional repair requirements, changing timelines, or unexpected issues to management
  • Communicate professionally with customers and internal departments to help minimize equipment downtime
  • Work closely with the Field Service Manager to provide excellent customer service and support continued growth of the field service operation
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures and environmental regulations
  • Attend factory-sponsored and technical training to remain current on the equipment being serviced
  • Assist with additional responsibilities as needed

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of related mechanical experience preferred, including field service, utility equipment, diesel equipment, medium- or heavy-duty trucks, or similar equipment
  • Previous field service experience strongly preferred
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities
  • Solid experience with hydraulic and electrical systems
  • Knowledge of drivetrain, chassis, and suspension systems
  • Experience troubleshooting CAN bus and electronic equipment systems is an asset
  • Comfortable working independently and making repair decisions in the field
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Comfortable using computers, laptops, and diagnostic software to document and troubleshoot repairs
  • Must have your own mechanic’s tools
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • CDL Class B or higher preferred; candidates must have a CDL or be able and willing to obtain one
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Vocational/technical school, military wheeled mechanic training, or equivalent hands-on experience is an asset
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and teamwork
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing technical and factory training

Travel Requirements

This is a field-based position serving customers throughout the Kansas City, MO metro area and surrounding territory.

Some overnight travel will be required based on customer and business needs. Technicians must be willing to travel outside the normal service territory when necessary.

Per diem is provided for qualifying overnight travel.

  • LMI system diagnostics
  • Experience with QuickServe, DTNA, or similar diagnostic software
  • DOT inspection experience
  • ANSI inspection/testing experience
  • Dielectric testing experience
  • Experience servicing aerial, utility, crane, or vocational truck equipment

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move equipment, parts, and tools throughout the workday
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Comfortable stooping, bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and working in different positions
  • Strong manual dexterity
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, including customer sites, outdoor locations, shop environments, and varying weather conditions
  • Comfortable operating and working around equipment at various heights, including equipment capable of reaching up to 160 feet

Compensation

$30–$40 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.

Overtime opportunities are available as needed.
