Mechanic – Fleet & Equipment (Auto Background Welcome)

Romulus, Michigan

Union Position – Teamsters Representation

If you can turn a wrench and know your way around cars, we’ll teach you the rest.

We’re looking for a hands-on mechanic to work on a wide mix of equipment — not just the same old stuff every day. You’ll be working on everything from passenger vehicles to heavy-duty trucks and city equipment.

  • Cars & light-duty vehicles
  • Diesel trucks & salt trucks
  • Street sweepers & fire trucks
  • Construction equipment & small engines
  • Hydraulics, brakes, steering, electrical, and more

If you’ve got a solid automotive background, that’s the main thing. The rest can be trained.

Union Role – What That Means for You

This is a union position under the Teamsters, which means:

  • Structured pay increases
  • Strong job protection
  • Clearly defined overtime rules
  • Consistent, fair working conditions
  • Long-term stability

Schedule & OT

  • Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Tons of overtime available
  • OT is optional — but there if you want to make real money

Pay & Benefits (This Is Where It Stands Out)

  • $22.35 – $27.94/hour
  • ZERO premium health insurance
  • 11.5% retirement contribution (you put in 1%)
  • 10 vacation days + 9 personal days
  • Full benefits package

Let’s be real — the hourly rate isn’t the highest out there.

But the union-backed stability, benefits, pension-style retirement, and overtime more than make up for it.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical issues across a wide fleet
  • Work on engines (gas & diesel), transmissions, and drivetrains
  • Troubleshoot hydraulics, brakes, and electrical systems
  • Perform preventative maintenance and inspections
  • Install seasonal equipment (plows, sanders, etc.)
  • Handle field service calls when needed
  • Welding/fabrication work as required
  • Complete work orders and track parts/labor

What You Need:

  • 2+ years of automotive mechanic experience (this is key)
  • State of Michigan Mechanics Certification
  • Experience with diagnostics and repairs
  • Ability to work on a variety of equipment
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain a CDL (within 60 days)

Why This Job?

  • Union-backed, steady, year-round work (no layoffs when things slow down)
  • Variety — you’re not stuck doing the same repairs every day
  • Strong benefits you won’t find in most private shops
  • Opportunity to learn heavy equipment and diesel on the job
