Overview: The Senior Systems Engineer plays a pivotal role in delivering advanced telecommunications and wireless engineering solutions, with a focus on the design and integration of Radio Access Networks (RAN), Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), and public safety communication systems. The position is responsible for upholding the highest quality and compliance standards across all technical deliverables while serving as a trusted advisor to project managers and cross-functional teams. Acting as a key technical lead, the Senior Systems Engineer ensures the successful execution of mission-critical projects in public safety, transit, and commercial sectors. All work is performed in alignment with Cartel’s ISO-certified Quality Management System and applicable regulatory and industry standards. This position reports directly to the Vice President, Design & Deployment.



Note: Senior Systems Engineer title is reserved for individuals registered with an engineering regulator in Canada (e.g. EGBC, PEO, OIQ, etc.).



Key Responsibilities


Wireless & RF Systems Engineering

  • Lead the design, implementation, and integration of wireless communication systems, including RAN, DAS, and public safety networks.
  • Conduct RF propagation analysis, in-building coverage modeling, and frequency/spectrum planning.
  • Perform system validation through field measurements, drive testing, and post-processing analysis.
  • Ensure all designs meet TIA, NFPA, and public safety telecommunications standards.
  • Oversee the interoperability between wireless and wired systems to ensure seamless network performance.


Systems Design & Integration

  • Design and develop comprehensive telecommunication infrastructures, including network topology, power systems, telephony, and data transport.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to define system architecture, integration requirements, and deployment strategies.


Documentation & Quality Assurance

  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including detailed drawings, specifications, and design packages using AutoCAD, MicroStation, iBwave, and Visio.
  • Review and validate deliverables to ensure compliance with regulatory, safety, and quality standards.
  • Support system commissioning and acceptance testing documentation.


Project & Client Collaboration

  • Partner with project managers and clients to define technical requirements, project timelines, and deliverables.
  • Provide technical support during design, deployment, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Contribute to proposal development, RFP responses, and technical presentations for clients and stakeholders.


Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Stay current with emerging technologies such as 5G, LTE, IoT, and Mission-Critical Push-to-Talk (MCPTT).
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance RF performance, system efficiency, and deployment practices.
  • Mentor junior engineers and share best practices within the engineering team.


Qualifications


Education & Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license or equivalent provincial designation preferred.


Experience

  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in telecommunications systems engineering.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience producing detailed design documentation, studies, and technical reports.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting proposal writing, RFP responses, and solution development.


Technical Expertise

  • Strong knowledge of RF design, propagation modeling, spectrum planning, and frequency coordination.
  • Proven experience with in-building DAS, public safety DAS, and enterprise-grade coverage solutions.
  • Familiarity with LTE, 5G, and small-cell architectures, including macro-to-indoor integration.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in coverage testing, TIA standards interpretation, and network optimization.
  • Skilled in using RF survey tools, spectrum analyzers, and scanning equipment.
  • Knowledge of NFPA, FirstNet, and public-safety-grade communications requirements.


Software & Tools

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, iBwave, Visio, and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with data analysis tools for RF modeling and performance reporting.


Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
