Job Summary:


A Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heavy machinery and industrial equipment used in construction, mining, transportation, and other sectors. This role requires expertise in mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems to ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems on heavy equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, and other key components.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems using diagnostic tools and manufacturer specifications.
  • Conduct safety inspections and ensure equipment meets operational and safety standards.
  • Replace or repair parts, including engines, transmissions, axles, pumps, and other major components.
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records.
  • Operate welding and fabrication tools when required.
  • Work from technical manuals, schematics, and manufacturer instructions.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of mobile and stationary heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, loaders, bulldozers, haul trucks).
  • Adhere to company policies, safety procedures, and environmental regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, operators, and other team members to prioritize and complete work orders.


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED (required); trade certification or Red Seal preferred.
  • Completion of a heavy-duty mechanic apprenticeship program or equivalent work experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and technical skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and schematics.
  • Familiarity with computerized diagnostics and maintenance software.
  • Physical strength and stamina to lift heavy parts and work in challenging environments (e.g., outdoors, in tight spaces).
  • Welding and fabrication experience (an asset).
