Our client is a pioneering deep-tech company building the next generation of long-term data storage — radically efficient, ultra-durable, and environmentally sustainable. Their breakthrough holographic storage technology encodes data as light within advanced materials, creating a resilient, energy-efficient alternative to traditional cloud infrastructure.

Following successful participation in the Intel Ignite and Deeptech Labs accelerators in 2024, along with two Innovate UK Smart Grants and a recent Seed+ funding round, the company is now entering a rapid growth phase. To drive forward their ambitious product roadmap, they are seeking a Mechanical Engineer (Precision Mechatronics) to take a lead role in designing and integrating precision electromechanical systems that form the core of their groundbreaking storage platform.

This is a rare opportunity to contribute to a technology that redefines how humanity stores information. The company’s approach is not about integrating pre-existing modules or repeating standard design cycles. Instead, this engineer will take full ownership of designing and building bespoke internal mechanical systems — from precision motion assemblies and tape transport mechanisms to the intricate integration of sensors, actuators, and control systems.

The role is highly hands-on and collaborative. Working closely with physicists, materials scientists, and software engineers, you’ll transition seamlessly between CAD design and lab-based prototyping, iterating rapidly to test, refine, and perfect innovative designs. Every component you create will directly influence the reliability, precision, and scalability of a technology designed to last for centuries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Push the limits of holographic data storage through inventive mechanical and electromechanical design.
  • Design and develop precision motion and electromechanical subsystems tailored to the company’s unique data storage architecture.
  • Integrate motion systems with microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators to achieve highly controlled, repeatable mechanical performance.
  • Serve as a technical leader within a cross-functional team of mechanical, optical, and software engineers.
  • Provide expert input and feedback during design reviews to foster continuous improvement.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex electromechanical and control system issues with a hands-on, analytical approach.
  • Work directly in the company’s Chiswick laboratory, designing, assembling, and testing prototypes.

You will bring:

  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical or mechatronics engineering, ideally within high-tech R&D or product development environments.
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • A strong track record of projects involving robotics, automation, or motion systems.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (designing parts, assemblies, and technical drawings).
  • Hands-on experience in prototyping, including machining, 3D printing, soldering, and assembly.
  • Expertise in mechanical fundamentals such as kinematics, materials, tolerancing, and failure analysis.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, enabling effective teamwork across disciplines.
  • A desire to work in a fast-paced startup environment where creativity and initiative are valued.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with GD&T and precision measurement techniques.
  • Familiarity with embedded microcontrollers (Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi).
  • Firmware programming in C/C++.
  • Python scripting for data analysis or test automation.
  • Exposure to optics, photonics, or precision instrumentation.

Apply now to help engineer the foundation of the next era in information technology.
