Job Title: Sr. DBA /Architect

Location: Chicago, IL

Employment Type: Contract (20hrs/week)

 

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Sr. DBA /Architect to manage, support, and optimize enterprise-grade database environments. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with SQL Server 2014 and above, strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work in a 24x7 mission‑critical environment. This role involves supporting development teams, ensuring database performance, and managing database infrastructure, upgrades, and migrations.

 

Key Responsibilities

·        Provide 24x7 database support, manage support queues, and ensure adherence to SLA requirements.

·        Perform hands‑on installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, and migrations across SQL Server environments.

·        Manage the full lifecycle of SQL Server environments including setup, security configuration, backup/recovery, and high availability.

·        Conduct performance tuning and optimization using tools such as SQL Profiler, Performance Monitor, and execution plan analysis.

·        Design and maintain effective indexing strategies to support scalable data growth and improve performance.

·        Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across databases, queries, and stored procedures.

·        Develop, manage, and troubleshooting reports using Microsoft Reporting Services (SSRS) and Business Objects.

·        Support business intelligence and reporting initiatives with accurate and timely data delivery.

·        Apply strong knowledge of database logical and physical design, especially in data warehousing and analytical environments.

·        Collaborate with architecture teams to design efficient, scalable, and secure database solutions.

·        Participate in SDLC processes, including requirements analysis, design reviews, development support, and release deployment.

·        Provide code reviews, tuning recommendations, and best‑practice guidance to development teams.

·        Mentor team members on SQL standards, performance best practices, and architectural guidelines.

·        Document database architectures, processes, and technical solutions clearly for internal and cross‑functional teams.

·        Independently and collaboratively diagnose and resolve complex database, performance, and production issues.

·        Demonstrate strong analytical and problem‑solving skills in fast‑paced, high‑availability environments.

 

Required Skills

·        Minimum 5 years professional experience as a SQL Server Application DBA (SQL Server 2014+).

·        Minimum 5 years’ experience in a 24x7 support environment with SLA management.

·        Minimum 5 years working with SSRS and Business Objects reporting tools.

·        Minimum 5 years’ experience in data warehouse database design, logical and physical modeling.

·        Minimum 5 years hands‑on experience with database patching, upgrades, installations, and migrations.

·        Minimum 5 years’ experience with SQL performance tuning, indexing strategy, and query optimization.

·        Minimum 5 years’ experience providing code reviews and mentoring development teams.

·        Minimum 5 years’ experience with database administration, SDLC, and systems analysis.

·        Minimum 5 years’ experience in technical documentation and communicating database architecture.

·        Minimum 5 years’ experience working both independently and within cross‑functional teams.

·        Must hold: Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate.
