Master Diesel Mechanic – Garbage & Recycling Trucks

Pay: $34 – $45 per hour

Location: Hyattsville, MD

Overview

We are seeking a Master Diesel Mechanic to support and maintain a fleet of approximately 20–30 garbage and recycling trucks. This is a key role for a highly skilled technician who can handle complex diagnostics, major repairs, and help keep operations running smoothly.

Experience in waste management is strongly preferred, but candidates with advanced experience in dump trucks, construction equipment, or other heavy-duty diesel vehicles will be considered.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues
• Maintain and service garbage trucks, including front loaders and roll-off trucks
• Perform preventative maintenance to minimize downtime
• Handle major repairs including engines, hydraulics, and heavy components
• Ensure all equipment is safe, compliant, and operating efficiently
• Maintain accurate service records and documentation
• Assist in troubleshooting recurring issues and improving fleet reliability

Qualifications

• 5+ years of diesel mechanic experience (heavy-duty required)
• Experience with garbage trucks or waste equipment strongly preferred
• Strong experience with dump trucks, construction equipment, or similar heavy machinery
• Advanced knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems
• Proven ability to diagnose and solve complex mechanical issues
• Certifications (ASE, diesel, or equivalent) preferred
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of repairs

Schedule

• Typical shift: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM (2nd shift)
• Flexibility available, including potential 3rd shift options
• Overtime available: 10–15 hours per week on average
• Drivers begin early (around 4:00 AM), so flexibility is important

Compensation & Benefits

• $34 – $45 per hour, based on experience
