Position Summary:

As a Project Engineer within Plutonium Facilities Engineering (PFE-DO), you will provide technical leadership for complex engineering projects supporting one of the nation's most critical nuclear facilities. Working directly with facility operations, maintenance, and program stakeholders, you will identify technical challenges, develop innovative engineering solutions, and drive projects that enhance system reliability, operational performance, and nuclear safety in a high-consequence environment.

In this role, you will be responsible for the full project lifecycle—from problem definition, scope development, and engineering design through field implementation, testing, and project closeout. You will lead multidisciplinary engineering teams, coordinate technical activities across multiple organizations, and ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulatory and quality requirements.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to national security missions, including nuclear weapons stewardship and modernization efforts. Success in this role requires strong technical leadership, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to independently navigate complex technical and operational challenges within a highly regulated environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the technical execution of engineering projects from concept development through implementation and closeout.
  • Define project scope, requirements, technical objectives, and engineering deliverables.
  • Direct multidisciplinary engineering teams and coordinate efforts across engineering, operations, maintenance, and project management organizations.
  • Lead design development activities, technical evaluations, and formal design reviews.
  • Provide engineering oversight during construction, installation, testing, startup, and commissioning activities.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate technical risks while resolving complex engineering issues during project execution.
  • Manage engineering change control processes and ensure technical documentation remains accurate and compliant.
  • Interface with stakeholders, contractors, vendors, and laboratory personnel to support successful project delivery.
  • Ensure engineering products and project deliverables meet applicable quality, safety, regulatory, and operational requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience leading the technical aspects of engineering projects, including coordinating multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering design processes, scope development, engineering documentation, and design review practices.
  • Proven ability to lead technical decision-making and execute projects in complex industrial, nuclear, defense, or highly regulated environments.
  • Experience resolving technical issues independently and providing engineering direction during project implementation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Advanced engineering or technical degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration highly desired.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards commonly utilized within Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DoD) environments, including ASME, NQA-1, IBC, IEEE, and NFPA.
  • Experience utilizing project scheduling and cost management tools such as Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
  • Familiarity with federal contracting, procurement, and subcontract management processes.
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, or developing junior engineers.
  • Prior experience supporting DOE, NNSA, DoD, or other government programs.
  • Ability to obtain required Project Engineering and Subcontract Technical Representative qualifications within established timeframes.

Due to federal restrictions contained within the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), citizens of certain countries who are not Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders) may be restricted from accessing facilities that support the mission, functions, and operations of national security laboratories and nuclear weapons production facilities

Benefits Include:

  • PPO and High Deductible Health Plan options with nationwide provider networks
