Industry: Industrial Power Generation / Generator Service & Rentals

Location: California — Field Service

Schedule: Full-Time | Field Service | Emergency/On-Call Availability

Compensation: $30-$40/hr+ DOE

Company Overview

An established industrial power generation company with more than 35 years of experience providing generator sales, rentals, maintenance, repairs, installations, and emergency power solutions throughout California and the western United States.

The company specializes in diesel, natural gas, and bi-fuel generators, supporting commercial and industrial customers with standby power, prime power, temporary power, and emergency generator systems.

With a large industrial generator rental fleet and multi-OEM service capabilities, technicians have the opportunity to work on a variety of generator platforms, electrical systems, and industrial power applications.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Power Generation Field Service Technician to troubleshoot, diagnose, service, repair, and maintain commercial and industrial generator systems.

This is a hands-on field service position requiring strong diesel and/or natural gas generator experience, electrical troubleshooting abilities, and the ability to independently diagnose mechanical and electrical equipment failures.

The technician will support customer-owned generators and rental power equipment, performing preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, generator startup, commissioning, and load-bank testing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial and industrial diesel, natural gas, and bi-fuel generators.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including oil and filter changes, fuel-system inspections, coolant testing, battery testing, and mechanical inspections.
  • Troubleshoot generator electrical systems, controls, voltage regulation, starting systems, and related components.
  • Diagnose engine failures involving fuel delivery, cooling systems, lubrication, sensors, and mechanical components.
  • Perform generator startup, operational testing, commissioning, and verification following installation or repair.
  • Conduct load-bank testing, monitor generator performance under load, and document test results.
  • Inspect, test, and troubleshoot automatic transfer switches (ATS) and associated electrical distribution equipment.
  • Support installation, delivery, setup, and commissioning of industrial rental generators and temporary power systems.
  • Assist with generator electrical connections, power distribution equipment, cables, and related accessories within authorized qualifications.
  • Respond to emergency service calls to diagnose equipment failures and restore generator operation.
  • Perform major and minor generator repairs, including engine repair and overhaul work when qualified.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and manufacturer troubleshooting procedures.
  • Identify replacement parts, document service findings, and communicate repair recommendations.
  • Complete service reports, maintenance records, inspection documentation, and customer-facing technical reports.
  • Follow applicable electrical safety procedures, manufacturer requirements, and environmental compliance practices.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, service management, and other technicians.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel and/or natural gas generators.
  • Experience working with commercial or industrial generator systems rather than exclusively residential standby generators.
  • Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to diagnose generator control, starting, charging, fuel, cooling, and electrical problems.
  • Experience performing preventive and corrective maintenance on generator engines and associated equipment.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical service manuals.
  • Familiarity with electrical testing equipment, including digital multimeters.
  • Experience with field service, customer-site repairs, and independent troubleshooting.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to customer locations.
  • Willingness to participate in emergency/on-call service coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multiple generator OEMs, including CAT, Cummins, Kohler, Generac, MTU, Detroit Diesel, Perkins, or John Deere.
  • Hands-on experience with larger industrial generators, particularly 100 kW–2 MW or greater.
  • Experience performing generator load-bank testing.
  • Knowledge of automatic transfer switches (ATS), voltage regulators, generator controls, and power distribution.
  • Experience with generator commissioning, startup, and temporary power installations.
  • Familiarity with generator diagnostic software and manufacturer-specific troubleshooting tools.
  • Experience with natural gas engines, bi-fuel systems, or industrial engine overhauls.
  • Experience supporting industrial facilities, critical-power applications, or emergency backup power systems.
  • Factory or manufacturer-specific generator service training.
  • Experience with California generator emissions requirements or CARB/AQMD compliance documentation.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is an experienced industrial Generator Technician or EPG Field Service Technician who is comfortable working independently in the field and diagnosing both mechanical and electrical generator problems.

They should have hands-on experience with multiple generator manufacturers, understand commercial and industrial power systems, and be capable of servicing equipment beyond routine oil changes and preventive maintenance.

Candidates with backgrounds in CAT Power Systems, Cummins Power Generation, industrial generator service companies, critical-power providers, and commercial generator rental organizations would be particularly relevant.

Primary Focus: Industrial diesel and natural gas generators, electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, field service, emergency repair, generator commissioning, and load-bank testing.
