HR Generalist
W2 Contract to Possible Hire
Remote, Onsite 1x/month in Austin, TX or Los Angeles, CA
$35/hr + Benefits
We are seeking an experienced HR Generalist to join our HR Shared Services team and provide hands-on support to employees and people leaders across the employee lifecycle. This role combines day-to-day HR support, performance management, employee lifecycle administration, and HR process improvement.
The ideal candidate has broad HR experience, strong judgment when navigating employee and manager situations, and a mindset for improving processes and the employee experience.
What You'll Do
- Serve as a first point of contact for employee and manager HR questions, resolving routine matters and escalating more complex issues when appropriate.
- Partner with people leaders on performance management and employee situations, helping assess circumstances, review documentation, apply policies, identify risks, and determine appropriate next steps.
- Manage employee lifecycle processes including onboarding, transfers, promotions, status changes, terminations, and offboarding.
- Provide first-line support related to benefits, payroll, leaves, workers' compensation, HR policies, and other employee programs, partnering with specialized teams as needed.
- Support terminations, reorganizations, and reductions in force through documentation, employee communications, HR transactions, logistics, and offboarding.
- Coordinate employment verifications, unemployment processes, immigration administration, and contingent worker lifecycle activities.
- Maintain accurate HRIS transactions, employee records, case documentation, and compliance requirements.
- Support HRBPs with reporting, documentation, data, and operational HR needs.
- Identify opportunities to streamline HR workflows, improve SOPs and self-service resources, and leverage technology, automation, and AI to improve HR operations.
What You Bring
- 3+ years of HR Generalist, People Operations, HR Shared Services, or related HR experience.
- Broad knowledge of the employee lifecycle, including onboarding/offboarding, performance management, employee relations, benefits, leaves, and HR policies.
- Experience partnering directly with people leaders on performance management and employee situations.
- Strong judgment with the ability to ask the right questions, assess context and risk, and recognize when escalation is needed.
- Experience working with HRIS and HR technology; ticketing or case-management system experience is preferred.
- Strong employee-service mindset, communication skills, organization, and attention to detail.
- Resourceful and comfortable working within established policies and SOPs while applying judgment to individual situations.
- Interest in process improvement and using technology to simplify and improve HR workflows.
- Experience with FreshService, Oracle, DocuSign, or similar platforms is a plus.
- SHRM or HRCI certification is a plus, but not required.
Ideal Fit
You have worked in a lean HR environment where you've supported multiple areas of HR rather than one narrow specialty. You're comfortable helping managers navigate performance and employee situations, understand the broader employee lifecycle, and know when to resolve an issue yourself versus involving HRBPs, Employee Relations, Payroll, Benefits, or other specialists.
You're also someone who notices when a process isn't working well and looks for practical ways to make it simpler, more efficient, and better for employees.
