Fact Checker

The Job We are seeking an enthusiastic and nimble fact checker to join The Ringer’s editorial department. The fact checker’s chief responsibility will be supporting the copy desk in maintaining its high standards in publishing accurate, well-vetted written, audio, video, and social content. This person will work closely with editors and writers to deliver pieces covering topics that drive the Ringer universe: sports, pop culture, national affairs, and more. This role will be remote. Candidates must be willing to work a flexible schedule with weekday shifts that will typically start at 8 a.m. ET, as well as some occasional weekend work.

What You’ll Do

  • Fact-checking daily written content
  • Using the Chorus CMS to produce blog posts, features, and other pages for The Ringer’s dot-com property
  • Directly communicating with tact to editors, writers, and producers to ensure necessary edits are completed correctly
  • Providing general administrative support as needed

What You Have

  • 1-8yrs experience/internship either in Publication, Staff writer, Reporter, fact-checking for a larger professional newspaper/magazine, or other publication.
  • Experience with web-page production and common content management systems
  • Knowledge of sports and sports statistics, pop culture, and current events
  • Comfort and familiarity with online research resources
  • A commitment to accuracy and rigorous attention to detail. Ringer fact checkers must be able to research both the granular (Is this name spelled correctly? Is this plus/minus number right?) and the big-picture (Does this thesis hold up under scrutiny? Do the facts in the first paragraph agree with the facts in the seventh paragraph?).
  • A genuine love of research, and the resourcefulness to go beyond simple Google searches
  • The ability to meet tight deadlines and thrive under pressure
  • Familiarity with journalism best practices
  • High-level communication, critical-reading, and writing skills
  • Be willing to be flexible with schedule depending on major sports and pop culture events
