One of the largest independent petroleum refiners in the United States, is seeking a highly skilled Lead Advanced Process Control (APC) Engineer to manage a team of control engineers and collaborate closely with the APC team, Operations, and Technical departments to support the refinery’s control system applications. This role is based in Toledo, OH, and offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the refinery’s operational success and control system reliability.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of process control system and application professionals, ensuring optimal performance and development.
  • Prepare and manage the budget for the Process Control System Department, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Support process control system reliability, alarm management systems, model-based advanced control solutions, and ensure consistency across the facility’s installed applications.
  • Monitor and optimize process control applications, ensuring they align with business objectives and operational needs.
  • Provide technical support to operations for troubleshooting process control systems and applications.
  • Lead the development of process control capital projects, including re-instrumentation, APC, and control engineering in support of the refinery's capital plan.
  • Participate in the justification of projects related to process control system infrastructure and modernization, collaborating across multiple departments.
  • Ensure that project designs and system modifications adhere to process control and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Assist in the selection and implementation of process control technologies that align with the business unit’s strategic goals.
  • Develop and implement staffing strategies to meet the engineering and technical resource needs of the department.
  • Set clear expectations for direct reports, ensuring alignment with department goals, and communicate concerns effectively with the Technical Department Manager.
  • Facilitate training for APC Engineers and Control System Specialists/Analysts as needed, fostering skill development within the team.
  • Provide process control engineering support to ABTs as assigned.
  • Offer process control engineering support during scope development, planning, and execution of turnaround projects.
  • Provide support to ensure the success of process control capital projects throughout the proposal, design, and construction phases.
  • Complete and maintain detailed reports and files for Advanced Process Control activities, ensuring accuracy and organization (both paper and electronic formats).
  • Provide high-level reports and updates to upper management, ensuring clear communication on project progress and challenges.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years in refining or petrochemical industries, with a strong background in process control.
  • Must have experience with Honeywell systems and process engineering.
  • Familiarity with industry process safety and environmental regulations, work practices, and compliance strategies. Solid understanding of basic refinery processes, reliability principles, refining economics, and fundamental budgeting and scheduling.
