Principal Controls Engineer

Key Role:

The Principal Controls Engineer serves as the deputy to the Controls Engineering Manager, driving the execution of strategic direction and technical standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain controls and electrical standards (PLC programming, electrical design, HMI/SCADA, commissioning)
  • Create and implement standard code and Add-On Instructions (AOIs)
  • Lead projects as technical consultant, reviewer, or engineer, ensuring successful execution
  • Establish and refine department processes and procedures for consistency and quality
  • Mentor and coach team members to enhance technical and organizational skills
  • Provide controls support, including on-call troubleshooting and remote assistance
  • Assist with drawing standards, CAD operation, programming, and file management software
  • Support application engineering, quoting, and special projects as needed

Technical Expertise:

  • PLC logic and controls (RSLogix, Siemens, GE)
  • Programming languages (Java, microcontroller, HDL)
  • SQL, Access, Excel, and electrical system design
  • HMI programming, VFDs, encoders, network/Ethernet controls
  • AutoCAD Electrical and conveyor system programming

Leadership and Communication:

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with customers, vendors, and team members
  • Independent troubleshooting and judgment

Requirements:

  • Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related degree
  • 7+ years of experience in warehouse automation controls
  • 2-3 years of electro-mechanical experience
  • Rockwell Automation software expertise (RSLogix 5000, RSLogix 500, Factory Talk)


**This is a remote role that requires 70% travel to client project sites**
