Senior Project Manager - Material Handling Systems

Our client is one of the nation's leading designers and manufacturers of steel work platforms and mezzanines. Recently, they expanded their offerings to include material handling solutions focused on addressing some of the industry's biggest challenges, including project delays, inefficient processes, and unpredictable system startups.

As their business continues to grow, our client is seeking a Project Manager to lead the execution of material handling projects from initial kickoff through installation, commissioning, and closeout.

Travel: 25–30%

Position Overview

The Project Manager will lead the successful execution of mid-sized material handling projects, managing scope, budget, schedule, and resources throughout the project lifecycle. This individual will coordinate cross-functional engineering, installation, and commissioning teams while serving as the primary point of contact for customers.

The role requires a combination of project management expertise, an understanding of material handling project lifecycles, and the ability to manage customer relationships, mitigate project risks, and drive continuous improvement in project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Project Planning & Execution

  • Develop and manage detailed project plans, including schedules, budgets, resource assignments, and key milestones.
  • Lead projects from kickoff through installation, commissioning, and final closeout.
  • Apply established project delivery standards, templates, and tools to ensure consistency across projects.
  • Maintain project schedules, budgets, and documentation in accordance with company procedures.
  • Track contractual requirements and ensure compliance with applicable safety standards.
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks, and proactively address issues that may affect scope, budget, or schedule.
  • Lead project meetings, document key decisions, and maintain action item trackers.
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting on project status, risks, and financial performance.
  • Support field teams during installation and commissioning as needed.

Customer Relations & Communication

  • Serve as the primary customer contact for assigned projects.
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships through consistent communication and responsiveness.
  • Manage customer expectations related to project scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Proactively identify and resolve customer concerns and project challenges.
  • Represent our client professionally during site visits, customer meetings, and project progress reviews.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Collaboration

  • Coordinate with engineering, estimating, and field services teams to align project deliverables and timelines.
  • Provide day-to-day direction to project coordinators, vendors, contractors, engineers, and subcontractors.
  • Support Sales with project definition, scope validation, and estimate reviews.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination across all project stakeholders.
  • Participate in peer reviews and lessons-learned sessions.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members, modeling effective project management, communication, and customer service practices.

Process Improvement & Business Growth

  • Identify and escalate opportunities to improve project delivery processes and operational efficiency.
  • Contribute to the development of standardized project management templates, tools, and best practices.
  • Identify ways to improve project profitability, execution consistency, and customer satisfaction.
  • Support the continued growth and development of our client's business.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of project management experience in material handling environments.

Technical Skills & Core Competencies

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Excel, Planner, and other project reporting tools.
  • Understanding of material handling project lifecycles, including installation and commissioning.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, priorities, and cross-functional resources.
  • Experience managing project budgets, schedules, scope, and customer expectations.
  • Strong customer relationship management and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to provide direction and coordinate internal teams, vendors, contractors, and subcontractors.

Travel Requirements

- Travel up to 25–30% for customer meetings, site visits, installation, and commissioning support.

Compensation is $125-150k base salary DOE
