About Rethink35

Rethink35 is a grassroots movement fighting the planned I-35 expansion through Austin, Texas. TXDOT’s plan includes widening the highway up to 21 lanes wide. The traffic in cities like L.A. and Atlanta that have already invested in highway expansion is notorious–-it’s proof that wider won’t work. Austin needs an alternative solution.

Rethink35 is working in partnership with local officials, organizations, and activists to fight the proposed expansion of I-35 and promote a study into alternatives, including rerouting non-local traffic around town, not through it.


This is an unpaid position. Rethink35 is a non-profit, 100% volunteer-driven organization.  

About the Position

As the Social Media Lead, you will oversee Rethink35’s Instagram, Twitter (X), and TikTok accounts. You’ll be supported by and mentor a group of social media interns from our University of Texas at Austin chapter. You will also collaborate with volunteers in our general organization whose skills include digital media, activism, design, and more. Your primary goal is to expand Rethink35’s reach by growing and connecting with our audience.


  • Collaborate: Attend the monthly strategy meeting and weekly working group meetings.
  • Learn: Get up to speed on Rethink35’s history and current operations.
  • Strategy: Develop and execute a comprehensive social media strategy aligned with our goals and campaigns.
  • Content: Create engaging, shareable content including graphics, videos, and written posts to share our message and motivate action.
  • Platform Management: Manage and maintain our positive, informing presence on Instagram, Twitter (X), and TikTok.
  • Community Engagement: Foster meaningful interactions with our audience, respond to comments and messages, and cultivate a vibrant online community that represents Austin.
  • Campaign Support: Collaborate with the team to integrate social media into our campaigns, events, and initiatives, leveraging platforms to raise awareness and mobilize support.
  • Analytics and Reporting: Monitor and analyze social media performance metrics, track progress towards goals, and provide regular reports to the team.
  • Team Leadership: Provide guidance and support to other volunteers by assigning them appropriate tasks, fostering their development, and ensuring the successful execution of social media activities.


  • Strong understanding of social media platforms, trends, and best practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling content
  • Creative thinker with a strong eye for design and storytelling
  • Ability to work collaboratively and patiently in a sometimes-fast-paced and sometimes-not environment, managing multiple projects and deadlines
  • Leadership experience and the ability to mentor and motivate a team
  • Genuine commitment to Rethink’s mission and grassroots activism

Time Commitment

We’re looking for an individual willing to commit 8-15 hours per month for at least 12 months.  

Rethink35 Events Schedule

Monthly Strategy Meeting: 7-8pm on the first Monday of each month (virtual)

Once a month, we meet as an organization to share updates, progress, and ideas.

Weekly Working Group Meetings: 6:30-7:30pm on Wednesdays (virtual)

Each week, the Communications Working Group meets for one hour to prioritize and collaborate on tasks.

Monthly Social: 2h on the first Sunday morning of each month (in-person)

Once a month, we host a social event at a coffee shop, park, or similar location to hang out with each other and welcome new volunteers. While not mandatory every month, we encourage you to join when you can!

Additional Events take place on an adhoc, as-needed basis. This could be an additional working group session leading up to a big event, or attending a big event such as a rally or fundraiser.
