Position Summary:

Under the general supervision and authority of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Nursing Manager manages the staff and patient care activities of assigned units. This role is critical for ensuring the monitoring of performance and the quality of patient care. The Nurse Manager is competent in all patient care activities of the unit, ensuring professional and ethical practices are followed and collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to provide quality patient care.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Deliver patient care in compliance with standards of care and practice, showing competency in emergency care specific to the assigned unit.
  • Make decisions regarding unit and personnel needs, ensuring patient care requirements and financial expectations are met.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare team members to integrate the department into the hospital's primary functions.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that guide and support service provision, coordinating with other departments as necessary.
  • Evaluate staffing levels to maintain a sufficient number of qualified and competent staff.
  • Oversee the orientation, continuing education, and training of unit staff with the help of the Education Coordinator.
  • Assess and improve cost-effective quality patient care services continuously.
  • Conduct annual unit assessments, performance improvement assessments, and evaluate unit equipment and resource use.
  • Engage in unit-specific marketing and educational activities for the community.
  • Monitor and evaluate the delivery of patient care and task completion.
  • Manage applicant selection, interviewing, and recommendations for hiring or retention.
  • Ensure the unit environment maintains safety, cleanliness, comfort, and satisfaction for patients/families and staff, adhering to safety and infection control policies.
  • Maintain ongoing professional development to fulfill job duties effectively.


Qualifications:

  1. Licenses/Certifications: Current Virginia RN license at time of hire. BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, & Fetal Monitoring required.
  2. Education/Experience: Five (5) years of nursing experience in Obstetrics, Labor/Delivery, and Nursery care settings. Supervisory experience and a BSN are strongly preferred.
  3. Special Qualifications: Ability to conduct research for policy revision and development. Skills in staff instruction on policies and patient care procedures are essential.
